ya all of these options work. what i do is just put it in a bucket of water until its waterlogged. usually takes a few days. than it will sink on its own. thats always worked for the wood ive found. It all depends on the wood... I had this one huge piece of std. Big Al's driftwood, and it had a hug...

If you have knowledge of their breeding habits/needs then sure. But since they are rare that is unlikely, and again should be left to professionals, who have biologists on site.

Did you remove the old filter when you added the new filter? That is the only obvious reason I can think of.

To get back to the original question; my 220 has washed beach sand for substrate and has 2 FX5s, with the fighting that goes on from time to time sand gets kicked up and sucked in by the filter, both filters work like champs. The sand just gathers on the bottom of the filter and rarely passes throug...
