I picked up 4 SAPs about 6 weeks ago. I had been searching high and low for them locally and had them on order through my LFS. the first time they called me to tell me the puffers were in, I went down there only to find out they had received some dwarfs instead of SAPs. total bummer but I asked them to keep trying. they finally called after another month and I've had them ever since. about 3 weeks ago, I noticed that one of them was favoring his anal fin and that it was really cloudy and looked injured. he was still moving around fine and had no trouble eating so I figured it was an accidental feeding time injury and to keep an eye on it. it seemed to get better over the next 2 weeks to the point where I stopped worrying, but the last few days he's been swimming really lethargically and often lists with his tail above his head in the current. he also doesn't seem to be eating as much through he does still pick at the occasional bloodworm.
1) Your water parameters
ammonia and nitrIte = 0, nitrAte <20, temp 78
2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.
105 gallon planted tank with co2
lace rock and driftwood
- 4 SAPs
8 serpae tetras
6 hatchetfish
7 ottos
5 julii corys
1 angelfish (I know...)
20-30% water change every 2 weeks (I try for every week, but it's usually every 2 weeks)
daily feedings with off days. flake food and algae wafers for the community, snails, freeze dried and frozen bloodworms for the puffer staple. occasional frozen shrimp.
4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.
the puffer was showing signs before this, but I did rescape the tank and switch from sand to eco complete substrate. fish stayed in the tank and did fine. I used some left over safe start to prevent a mini cycle.
5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it?
established for 7 months as community, puffers added 6 weeks ago.
fishless cycle with ammonia and established filter media squeezings and then safe start before adding fish.
