Money wise you're best to go with the second newest unless there's something about the newer item that you want. He can also check out refurbished ones from Apple as that's a great way to save money. I've had a shuffle, 2 nanos, and 2 touches (that list looks crazy but between them breaking and being stolen...). I like the touches the best. I've had 2 nanos and both broke. One just stopped working altogether and that one was replaced as it was under a year old. Apple is wonderful because you only get a 90 day warranty on the replacement and the wheel on mine broke very shortly after that was done so of course they were no help.

I'd suggest a touch as IME the nanos are crap.

I have the broken wheel one plugged into my car and the touch is plugged into my alarm clock.

yeah the only major difference in the itouch 3rd gen and 4th gen is the camera. i believe its a higher resolution camera as well like 5.0 mp. i would suggest a touch. its lasted me the longest out of that and a nano i had a couple years ago. a number of my friend have either an iphone or itouch and all love it. the more computer savvy people i know can do some crazy things with them. the nano i had just stopped working one day without showing signs of going and i had it for two years, the touch i have had for three years this christmas, jailbroken for about two years and still runs nice. plenty of room on it for me to keep a few games and i have like 600 songs which i turn over, delete some/add some as i wish. once you start venturing into the app world you will be baffled as to what there are apps for out there. they dont lie when they say theres an app for everything. i know your a health freak :) and they have a whole category section for health/fitness i believe

LOL, sounds like these guys know a lot more than me about it! But just fwiw, my nano stood up to years of abuse, in the purse, on the trails with dogs, etc, then I threw it in a drawer and forgot about it for over a year (when I got my iphone). Then my mom decided she wanted one so I dug it out, plugged it in, and it's worked like a charm for another year now! Guess it's luck :-)

My brother-in-law took my nano a few years ago. I got it when it was still first generation. Strictly music. He is still using it today. That has to be almost 7 years now.

It really depends on what features you want. My old nano was about 2x as wide as a lighter and 1/4 as thick. My old RIO is about the size of a lighter. Both are music only. Now, as the others have mentioned, you'll get a tonne of features that you may or may not use anyway.

I just want music. Keep it simple.

Do you want games? If you just looking for portability and music, a click-wheel style would be great. I would say they don't come obsolete. I have the first generation of iPod and I still use it, and I also have an iPod touch.

But if you want an amazing iPod that has tons of games and is great to watch videos and for surfing the web, definately get an iPod touch. But they're not very tough so don't take it to the gym.

My touch is just for music. It doesn't have a wheel to break ;) My first one I used to take around and play games on it but it was stolen. Now mine stays safe by my bed. Someone can steal the nano for all I care, jokes on them because it's pretty much worthless.

I don't play games or watch vids. I don't want anything from it but music.

nanos can have durability, reading these reminded me that a friend of mine that i work with had a nano(one of the newer-ish square ones, not rectangle) and forgot about it once he got his iphone. that nano stayed in his car for at least a year-two years tops through heat and cold. he brought it back into work one day to see if it still worked and it did. had all music still on it and kept its charge like normal. i think any ipod you will be happy with if your just looking for music. thats all my mom ever wanted out of one, she got a nano back when i first got my touch and she has since moved to the touch and she asked me how i ever let her get the nano with everything the touch can do.

Legally and ethically, I don't think so. Get an iTunes account - I love mine!
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

Congrats on the new addiction ;)

You'll enjoy it!

I don't think it has the gyroscope that others have so it can take a beating. I just watched the Apple "Nano" commercial on their site. Pretty slick. They got the song wrong :P "Cake: Short skirt long jacket" not "Comfort Eagle". Anyway... note the clip on it. That is VERY important whether you choose to use it or not.

Ipods in general have a history of overheating. 3rd party arm bands and holders help with this. Don't stick it in your pocket, run it for hours. It needs some air to cool that battery and CPU down. My arm band for my Nano was just above the bicep. Great for cycling and running. Walking to work or on the train, it was in my shirt pocket.
