Here is how I help the noise level a little.

Image

By slanting that filter the pump outlet hits the top edge and flows over it instead. While trying to figure out what to use to accomplish this I had a brilliant (if I do say so myself) idea. Here is what I used.

Image

My spare media bag from my AC20 that has been waiting patiently in my heavily fed snail tank. So that means time to cycle!
During tank cleanings this weekend I will add more "squeezings".

Temp at a steady 80*
Dosed with 2ml Ace Hardware Janitor Strength Ammonia (contains 10% ammonium hydroxide)

All future readings will be ph/ammonia/nitrite/nitrate
9/16 8.3/>2/0/5.....added 1ml more
9/16 ---/<4/-/-.....that's what I was looking for

Try rotating the filter cartridge 180 degrees. I have used that hood, once you have it turned around, the cartridge should sit at the bottom of the well on the left side where the water comes in, but almost up to the top on the right side, where it pours into the biowheel area. This makes nearly the entire surface of the cartridge flow through, and greatly decreases chances of problems with overflows and accidents.
No matter how magnificent your successes or devastating your failures, the worlds' approximately 5 billion impoverished people could not possibly care less.

I'll give it try. A lot of the noise comes from where the water comes out and falls onto the filter. By tilting the way I have it has cut down a lot of that. I'll try anything to get it quieter. I've been spoiled by the silent AC20's and tonight will be the first night that the filter is going to run all night. It's going to take so getting use to.

Edit: tonights reading

What kind of filter is that? Are you adding any live rock at all to seed the tank? There is something unnatural about your rock formation. Almost too perfect.

The filter is a Marineland Eclipse 3 that came with the tank. I'm cycling it freshwater and then going to brackish. It will eventually go full marine but I have a lot to learn before I take that step.

Funny you should say that about the rock. That's exactly what my wife said also. Too perfect.

It will take a while though I have found that media squeezing cut the time quite a bit.

I don't know why the ammonia reading is so high. I did the test twice and got the same reading each time. I'll probably check again in the morning.
