GSP in new 37 gallon tank.

I have a chance to pickup a 37 gallon (30x12x22) tank, stand, heater and Marineland Eclipse 3 filter/hood for cheap. Would this be large enough for one GSP?

The built in filter is only rated at 250 gph so that only puts you at 6-7x water turnover. Do the Eclipse hoods have a spot for a HOB filter? Or maybe an added internal filter.

From what little I can find, they do not. The plan is to use what's there for now and upgrade to a canister later on. I am a bargain hunter so that gives me time to find one. Speaking of canisters what would you suggest?

I would always go for Eheim. My favorite is Eheim Pro 2224. I use them in my 30-40 G tanks. They are user friendly, and works very well. You have a filter for a very long time when you buy one. It's also easy to get spare parts if something breaks or wears down (which it rarely does). Eheim usually is quality through and through (there are some exceptions though), and so is Eheim Pro 2224. The only other brand of cannister filters I use is Fluval - but I don't know the newer models. The older models are good though - good quality, and rarely needs to be rinsed.

Stay away from Sera cannister filters. I've only had one, but I hated it really badly (it was my first cannister filter, so I didn't know any better when I bought it). I don't think I ever experienced opening it without having an awful lot of trouble closing it and making it work again afterward. It's the only time I was happy when a filter broke down...

Im using a marineland 220 and love it. Super quiet really easy to set up.

Thanks for the suggestions. My LFS is a Marineland dealer so I might check them out first since I try to support local.

Edit: I picked the tank up last night. Been empty about 4 months and needs a good cleaning inside and out. That will be my weekend project along with trying to make room for it in my bedroom.

Here it is.



I spent all day yesterday on it, because it was filthy. Overall it was in good shape and according to the tag the tank is 3 years old. The stand had me a little worried. I found out it was a Aqua Culture 20/29 gallon stand rated at 290 lbs. The previous owner had the tank set up for approximately 2 1/2 years with no issues but I wasn't going to take any chances. This tank is going into my bedroom and it has hardwood floors so here is what I did.



I friction fit cut four 2x4's the liquid nailed them to the sides and anchored with screws through the top and bottom then to cut down on lateral movement liquid nailed and screwed some 3/4" plywood to the 2x4's.



I'm pretty sure I could park a small car on there now without having any trouble.



I'm half way there with the tank test and so far so good. Once that is completed I'll probably move the tank inside later on in the week.Then comes the fun part, planning the tank.

The plan is for 1 GSP.
I'm a little intimidated by the thought of having to take it to full marine one day but after thinking long and hard about it I hopefully have enough time to learn what I need to know to make a successful transition.

I currently have 3 tanks (two 5 1/2 gal and one 10 gal) and carrying around buckets was starting to get old. I've decided with the new tank that all that was going to change because I now have a 25' Python. I'll be mixing my brackish water in a tote (that can be stored under my bed) and using a pump to get it into the tank. I'm planning this for the long term and want to get it as easy as possible. I understand that the tote needs to be food safe and here is the one that I'm look at.

Do you think this would be okay? I can't see anywhere where it says whether it's food safe or not.

As far as the tank goes I'm torn between wanting to do a (fake) mangrove set up or just go ahead and set up like you would for marine. Any suggestions, or especially pics, would be appreciated.

I'm working on my list of "things to buy" to try and get ready. So that'a all for now, but more to come soon.

Yes it does. They have a cutout on either end that should work perfect.

Looks good. I like the general shape/size of that tank. And I love the black silicone, to me it kind of frames a tank. What kind of deal did you get on it?

Glad to hear that you can add another filter if needed. I would almost try it with just the eclipse filter and see what happens. Just keep in mind that if you decide to add a HOB filter you need enough clearance behind the tank. Just something to keep in mind unless you are on a hardwood floor and can scoot the tank a few inches after emptying most of the water.

Post some pics once it's up and running.
