Shrimp Gone AWOL

Post by pufferpuggirl »

I was up early this morning, laying on the sofa watching some tv, and I seen my retriever wagging her tail and going into "play mode", and my other little dog looking down at something. I figured it was a cricket, as they always seem to be randomly roaming throughout the house anymore. I didn't bother getting up immediately, but then curiosity got the best of me, and good thing it did. Upon closer inspection it was one of my Japonica shrimp! He was all the way across the room from the tank he was meant to be in. Don't know how long he'd been out, but I picked him up and put him back into the tank. He zoomed off like nothing was wrong.

I thought if anything were to escape it would be the red-claw crabs that are in there. One of the crabs was living in my hang-on filter, but then it went back into the tank with the other one. :)

So now I've got to worry about my shrimp escaping! That tank has one of those plastic condensation lids on it and I guess that makes it easy for escape.
It's always something!!

I've heard stories about chasing flip-flopping ghost shrimp down the hallway...
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

HAHAH that's funny. I used to get ghost shrimp just for fun to clean up, and they'd hop out of the net as I was putting them in LOL

I've seen Biggie chase a few ghost shrimp until they jumped out of the tank and stuck on the acrylic light guard. I'm assuming he finally ate them or ran them off because there have been no sign of them in some time. Glad you found yours in time.

Ghost shrimp and Japonica's aren't the same are they? I thought Ghostie's were smaller, whilst Japonica's are fairly large, nearly 2" long.
Yeah well when I went to do a water change on that tank today, I found another one ready to escape. I will have to see about getting a better top for the tank.

Most shrimp are more than capable escape artists. Ghost shrimp and Japonica are similar in adult size, and both will leave tanks if they wish. the red-claw crabs are great escapees also - I found one more than 50 feet away from its tank, and it survived its excursion quite well.

These Japonica shrimp in my tank are huge, way bigger than the DP's. Easily 1.5" maybe more.

Japonica's are Amano shrimp. The scientific name is Caridina multidentata OR caridina japonica.

Amano are much different then ghosts, but breeding is similar. Each's offspring are born as larva, that only grow in BW or SW.

That I knew.... and the funny thing is when I see adverts for people selling Japonica and saying how they will breed. Don't think so.

Ya, they will produced eggs, both of them. They will mate and get berried, but larvae start to die off..
