Another Young Suvattii Dead

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Another Young Suvattii Dead

Post by pufferpuggirl »

I've just found my other young suvattii dead in the tank. :(

He was fine last night, and I've been so busy this morning that I am not sure if he was already dead or not, but I think he must have been dead since early morning hours.

I haven't done the water tests yet to see what the water is like, but this is a tank that's been running since last year. I did have 2 young suvattii and 1 youngish Palembang in there, and a few months ago the one young suvattii died, leaving just 1 suvattii and 1 Palembang in the tank. I don't see any signs of biting on the dead suvattii, but I do see blotchy patches on his body. It sort of looks as if someone had taken bleach and removed some of the colouring to his body. The Palembang looks fine in every way, but naturally I am afraid that something might kill him too.
I need to go out for a bit, but when I come back, I'm going to do a big water change, and I will test the water too, just to see what things are looking like in that tank.
Does anyone have any ideas about the blotchy appearance of the suvattii. I will try and get a photo before I dispose of the body, and maybe that will help in getting a diagnosis.

I will post the photo and water parameters when I come back from doing my deeds.

Any chance the4 Palem is killing them in the night? I guess their bodies would be torn up though. Is he much bigger than them?
You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...

That was actually my first thought too, but I can't see any signs of violence to the body, and the other suvattii that died didn't really have any outward signs either .... but I took 2 photos of the poor things body before I disposed of it, so that maybe someone can tell what it means the way the skin looks.
The Palembang is a bit bigger, but not by very much and they always seemed to get along, never any episodes of violence or bullying.

I did a 50% water change on the tank, but before I did, I checked a couple parameter:
Ammonia 0%
Nitrite 0%
Nitrate 40% (**Keep in mind that mine comes out of the tap at 40ppm and I don't have trouble with any of my other tanks with puffers in them -- so I don't think it's that**)

I really love my suvattii and now I don't have any of the original babies that I got last year. I'd like to get more, but it would be nice to know why they are dying. I checked and the other small one died back on the 13th of October, so another death just after one month and one week. Weird!

Thank you eieio .... I've been sitting here thinking about this. I just don't understand what the situation is with the suvattii. I originally had 3 young suvattii in my tank ..... one died about 6-8 months ago, that was the first one to go. Then the other one dying last month in October, and now the last young one dying today. I don't understand it. I still have the old guy, Bam-Bam (he used to belong to flash.dan), and he's in an entirely different tank, so hopefully nothing will happen to him. But it's making me wonder what it is with the suvattii ... maybe something I'm doing, or not doing. I don't know, but it's not good because I like them, and I'd like to replace them. :(

schismy007, were they all from the same "litter"?
if so, maybe a genetic problem.

Thank you L!$A for your kind words, and eieio - 2 of the suvattii were from the same litter and one was not, but as they looked all the same, I cannot tell you who died, and in what order.

I actually commented to my husband last night that the suvattii didn't look "normal", although his skin wasn't the colour it was when I found him dead, he looked okay, but it was more to do with his posture than anything else that made me think something was up, he was leaning to one side, but not completely over. But then I seen him later, at his regular hang-out spot, so I thought everything had returned to normal. :?

I know, they are such cute little puffers too, it's awful to have to retrieve their body from the water so lifeless and still. I am already thinking of getting another, even though I should probably wait. Last year everybody had them and people were finding it hard to get rid of them, I mean, I got one for £5 because the man couldn't find a home for it. Now that I'd like to have another one, they just aren't to be found, although I do know of one place that has one. I may take a trip down there to see about getting another.
