i did wash it before i put it in the tank.....and i cycled the tank for over a month as well with a magnum 350 polishing tube in it....and a 250 powerhead with a prefilter....
Thanks a bunch that really helps, I found someone who will ship me the sand I need. I'm too excited, I can't wait to get his new tank cycled and ready for him!

i want to ask for advice on aquascaping in my fahaka tank. i was told that you can't put plastic plants in it because they eat them....and i didn't really want to start another planted tank....i will if that's what would be best though.....any ideas from the experts?
Pufferpunk has plastic plants in her fahaka tank. Yes her fahaka tears them apart. You could always do your aquascape like a river bottom with driftwood and rocks.

I have plastic plants in Pookie's tank and he doesn't bother them at all, he did bite a chunk out of my bubbler stick thing though lol. I planted some bulbs in the tank and he dug them up and killed them

that's terrible about the bulbs......
i had a friend tell me that his fahaka died after eating the plastic plants in the tank so that scared me somewhat....
i have 2 30 gallon planted tanks now...one with co2 running in it...i just didn't want to plant another tank.....so i've decided to take the advice given and make it a river bed appearance.....i'm going to start searching the landscaping place right down the street from me here at work....
as far as bubbles in the tank i get a good bit of that with a 250 powerhead/prefilter i have in there....i can adjust the bubbles...and Ra doesn't bother it at all......
wow, Maybe the plastic isn't such a good idea! What are your thoughts on putting bamboo in the tank? i'm pretty picky about what goes in his tank and have been considering putting some in there just not sure if it's safe. I had some in with one of our bearded dragon and he tore it up really bad but he didn't get sick from it. I dunno....
Oh, i've been giving Pookie a crayfish every once in a while, he loves them (as long as the claws are removed) have you ever fed them? I read that they are safe, I usually keep them in a tank by themselfs for a week or so to be sure.

i really don't know about bamboo....i'll need to research that some....and get back with you.....
i'm looking for a few baby crays ...when i get them i'm going to qt them and gut load them for Ra....i've read that it's good to do that for nutrition.....and yes he's supposed to love eating them.....so i will be quite excited to see if indeed he does...
There's always plenty of slow growing, low light plants that you can use.. Anubias, crypts, etc. They don't need super high light levels or pruning (really, I almost never prune mine, just chop up the anubias ocasssionally).
A bunch of driftwood along the bottom making a big "cave" would be perfect, some crypts in the foreground, and put the anubias (or java ferns) on top of the driftwood so its closer to the light.. that would work nicely.

thanks for the suggestions Myaj.....i have numerous anubias in my planted tanks i have now...
i didn't want to mess with any more live plants .....and another reason is Ra doesn't like light very much....he buries himself when i turn on the light....if i turn it off he comes out and swims around everywhere.....i'm trying some moon lights on him now to see if i can get him to swim with some kind of light......
