Somethings wrong with Elvis

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

I must admit that i know the best way should be without chemicals, but like edmlfc1 i have no quarantine tanks large enough for my marine fish to go into and because of my sump i cant just remove the LR and hypo the whole tank, therefore i am using the medication i mentioned earlier, i am also adding garlic to their food.
Spongebob: Yes they can get over it my reticularis and trigger did but i lost a dogface, clown, damsel and copperband butterfly. I think and it is only my personal opinion that sw ich is something that needs to be treated in some way but the question is which way is best!?

Edmlfc1: Please can you keep this updated as i would really like to hear peoples opinions of treatment for this! :D

You have got to wonder about "Dad's" advice, if only says to QT for a week...

I highly suggest against a DSB with any creatures that may disturb it like that.

I used Prazi in my discus tank for treating ich in there, it might work in SW too. Also 100ppm vitamin C could help.

i think maybe PP means that quarentining for a week won't cure ich..

I have no idea... ? I guess if things distrurb a DSB (deep sand bed) it can release pockets of nasty stuff.. ? PP?

Would Prazi be reef safe? Or at least live rock safe? Or would it kill all the live rock?

Ich may appear to be cleared up from the fish's body in 1 week but believe me, it is happily reproducing in the tank to go back & infest the fish again. Read the article on treating ich in our Library, to educate yourself on the lifecycle. :)

So I shouldn't have gone with a dsb? I thought it was good to control the nitrates?
I have been treating the tank with vit. c and I also have some prazipro on hand.

This is what I'm going to do:
Soak his food in prazipro, keep treating the tank with vit c and when the beta glucan get's here I'll soak his food in that too. Does that sound like a plan?

If marine ich and freshwater ich are similar, then raising the temp. will help. Like PP said just one week won't cure it. With the freshwater variety it is recommended to reduce the amount of lighting or keep the lights off altogether. Messes with the parasite's reproduction. If you don't have any corals in the tank I would keep the lights out (less stress for the fish too). If you have coralline algae on your LR it will dead but it will eventually grow back (won't affect the nitrifying bacteria). I only got ich in my SAP tank- was due to high nitrates causing stress- parasites are opportunists- and it was treated rather easily with lights off and PraziPro (removed live plants- cleaned with tap water and placed in another tank). Good Luck

High temps won't work on sw ich. The only thing I knew that would is hypo but I don't have a large enough qt tank to do hypo on the main tank.

Ich is not a fungus, it is a parasite.
So I shouldn't have gone with a dsb? I thought it was good to control the nitrates?
It is--for reef tanks where the sand won't be disturbed, not in a tank with predators that disturb the sand like a large puffer will do.
This is what I'm going to do:
Soak his food in prazipro, keep treating the tank with vit c and when the beta glucan get's here I'll soak his food in that too. Does that sound like a plan?
I was using the Prazi for IPs in the discus when I noticed ich on them too (see what happens when I don't QT a perfectly healthy-looking fish? That healthy-looking discus was carrying parasites it could handle that my other fish could not). My discus breeder/friend said to pour the Prazi into the tank to treat the ich & get the temp up to 86. I do not know if this will harm any inverts in your LR or not.
If marine ich and freshwater ich are similar, then raising the temp. will help.
Not at all the same--2 totally different parasites. SW crypt (not ich) does not respond the same to higher temps & with it attacking gills so often, it can kill the fish from lowering O2 in the tank with the higher temps. I have occasionally seen ich spots on fish that went away w/o treatment. Keep an eye on things for now & see if it gets worse. Healthy, vitamin-soaked foods, perfect water quality & vitamin C, might just do the trick.

I have read that in some cases, garlic has an effect on parasites too.
