Need help preventing GSP tooth overgrowth

I've had a green spotted puffer for about 9 months or so in a full marine tank. He's been doing well - very active, big white belly, eats a lot as puffers do, etc. The weird thing is I'm actually having trouble finding a way to keep his teeth worn down. I have hermits in the tank, as well as a varie...

Re: Money-saving tips

Craigslist is definitely a huge money saver. In my area there was a 75g with no problems for $40. No stand or lid but still. Also, lego's are officially aquarium safe. You can buy pounds of them on ebay for very cheap to build places for your fish to swim around and hide in. Another great benefit is...

Re: My Gsp's belly turned black

Also, what were you feeding him? Did he look chubby or fat or was his stomach skinny?

Re: How fast freshwater to marine? (gsp)

He still needs to be separated from the cories, as they will not tolerate any salt at all & he needs salt now. Yes. I was hoping on getting a mandarin or scooter blenny with him though. If he ever did start to nip or show signs of aggression I also would have an extra 20 I could immediately use...

Re: How fast freshwater to marine? (gsp)

If I did a fast change to saltwater, would you recommend getting some saltwater from a lfs to get the good bacteria going or would you say that's too risky of bringing in parasites etc? There is no bacteria in the water column. You could add Bio-Spira but you're still taking a big chance. What's th...

Re: How fast freshwater to marine? (gsp)

Nick did it where he set up the tank first at the SG and quickly drip acclimated the puffer to the new SG. please read: http://www.thepufferforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=22473&p=240088&hilit=+procedure#p240084 If I did a fast change to saltwater, would you recommend getting some s...

Re: Unusual tankmates for GSP?

[quote="lucf20"The Puffers are not getting getting picked on ....[/quote] That's not what people are worried about. It's the opposite. GSPs are either very docile with no problems or more commonly very, very aggressive. If it's already shown aggression and killed a fish it's a matter of ti...

Re: How fast freshwater to marine? (gsp)

What I plan on doing is putting him alone in a 55 gallon with half of the water from the current tank and the filter on the current tank (a 55 bio-wheel) which should get the bacteria started well enough for a small gsp in 55 gallons of water and put him on marine through time in that. By the time h...

Re: How fast freshwater to marine? (gsp)

Oh yes, they will be separated. Right now they are all in a 20 (I clean the gravel every other day and ammonia etc is surprisingly fine so far). I'm getting 2 tanks around 55 gallons to split them and expand in fish a bit.

How fast freshwater to marine? (gsp)

I was wondering how fast you could go from freshwater to 1.020ish marine (without him panicking or uncomfortable)? Does it take months or can you do it in a couple weeks? I have a gsp, Ralph, that's a little over 2 inches and want to make the transition fast so I can put a fish with him. He's actual...

Re: Rescued Figure 8 from Petco Update

I assume the snail was pretty big? A snail for him to eat should be about the size of his eye. You can get pest snails at pet stores for free that are the right size. He'll need to eat them because if he doesn't his teeth will grow too much like a rodent's and he won't be able to eat (they eat the w...

Re: lights?

I wouldn't use the tank light. Tank lights are VERY bright and the water in rivers, lakes, etc do not have nearly that amount of light coming through the water. Just use daylight or keep the room lit during the day. Yeah, I mean after all...the sun is only like what...2...maybe 3 candlepower? :rofl...

Re: GSPs nocturnal

My gsp Ralph sleeps in the dark. If the light is turned on for just a couple seconds he starts to wake up, I feel really bad turning on the light for a minute because of this - it really seems to confuse him.
