Two dogface puffs in same tank?

Post by Snausy »

Hi guys, I searched for this answer but finally decided I should just ask.

I have an awesome little dogface in QT now, a larger Harlequin Tusk in the 100...and I wanted to ask if one could keep two dogface puffs together in same tank. There is an awesome one at the LFS and I wanted to add him as well.

Can you have two dogface puffs together in 100+?

Thx for reply

I *think* you can keep two dogface puffers together, considering individual personality, but I don't think a 100 gallon tank would be big enough to handle the bioload. Don't the Tusks get pretty big too?

Agree with Myaj, that bioload could become quite large. Are you planning on a sump & refugeum?

Well yes there is already a 55 gal tank underneath with baffles making a refugium/return/skimmer section. Octopus 200 is working well atm.

I see your point though. Two puffs would be a rather large bioload when they get 12" apiece. I'm just fighting the "I've fallen in love with the puffer at the lfs" syndrome is all. I'm sure you've been there. :D

Where on earth do you guys put such big tanks? Do you rent a seperate house for the tanks? I am very envious... ours is only 35 gallons :( and we would love to have a bigger one, but no room. Should we kick the dog and Cocketial out?

No furniture... makes sense... that would work then. Who needs a TV when you have so many tanks in your living room ;)

Hehe, I rent a 2 bedroom apartment and have tanks everywhere.

75 in the kitchen, 60 and 33xl and a 10 in the living room, 20L and 10 in the bedroom, two 20H, 3 10's and a 29 reef setup with 29 sump in the other bedroom.

I could easily make room and set up more (or actually, I'd prefer to tear down smaller tanks and condense into larger ones) but I am trying to avoid doing that until I'm settled in a house.. which will probably be never.

Myaj, I agree with the condensing of tank. It's a real pain to do so many water changes and have so much equipment to look after. We've got 6 tanks running now and it get very tiring.

Water changes isn't so bad really.. I drain them all 50% out into the garden (or in winter down the sink), then hook up and refill them all at the same time. It gets awful loud in here for a while with all the splashing and waterfalling from the filters, but it saves time from the drain/fill/drain/fill.

Feeding is where I have a problem.. did I feed those guys yet today? Wait, is it your fast day? Okay I fed that one, but did I feed this one? Ah, I left the zuchanni in the microwave AGAIN!

Print out a small calendar and tape it to the side of each tank. Cross off each day after you feed the ones in that tank. Helps to keep feeding and fast days straight.
