Shell on?

i think my fahaka at 6 inches i want to introduce to shell on food.

Shell on prawns i think are a little big for him. What about shell on mussel, surely this is tough for him, i am talking about the load like 2 inches big and clamped.
What about Winkles, Cockles always come with shell without and are impossible to find anywhere.

What about Whitebait?

krill will be next to impossible to get unless dried.

Unless bought from a aquatics shop which costs a fortune for a silly little bit of prawn or muscle which does not have the shell on anyway what about ordinary muscles like we eat surely they cant crack through them?

You need to find an LFS that stocks Topical Marine brand of foods. The majority of them do!


That way you can feed frozen krill, cockle etc with the shell on.

King prawn with shell can be cut to size and there are always snails.

Prawns and mussel can be bought from most supermarkets.

I bought a bag of tropical marine cockles from Dobbies garden centre, they dont sell it but keep it for their predators. I asked and they got me a bag in, was about 4quid. they are all in the shell so works out nicely.

I have found that the cockles in shell available at the moment are very small as they are not in season at the moment. Clooney pops them like I eat my cereal. He now gets clams instead, which he loves.

The key to any puffers diet is to keep it varied, I feed a mixture of shell on or off, mussels, prawns, live shrimp, cockles, crab claw, fish, squid, and the odd pea

I also find that feeding shell on prawns and crab claws are two of the messiest things i have ever fed my puffer, so i feed him cockles and muscles. I only feed him live shrimp and prawns (without the shells) as a treat now and again.
I am quite fortunate to live by the coast and have quite a few local fishmungers and seafood restaraunts around to choose from.

Oh yeah and don't forget my free range garden snails lol he loves them.
FREE being the operative word lol.

Nice Tank manutius but tell me something, don't your Mabu try and eat everyhting else in the tank. I would love to put some other fish in my tank with my Fahaka but its a certain death sentence lol.

If so I have just found a new source for puffer food.

At the side of their fresh fish stall they keep a freezer with some 'no frills' seafood in. Not in the general freezers but at the side of the fresh fish. In there you will find shell on prawn and shelled mussel and good prices.

for eg.

I normanly pay around £4 for 250g of king prawn.
They do for £4.30 a 1KG bag.
