Hi
im just cycling a 25ltr AquaCube which will be home for a couple of DPs. Can anybody offer any advice please?

Honestly i'd only go for one in that tank, 5 UK / 6.5 US gallons I think 2 in there may be a little cramped.

Plenty of decor, plants rocks, bogwood etc will make a nice home for DP's.

Would you advise sand or gravel substrate or don't they mind?!

You're rioght there are many different views on stocking levels of these puffers on different forums. 5 gallons per puffer has been set by long term keepers here and is a guideline for people new to keeping puffers. Obviously stocking level is your choice and i'm not here to preach at you only to give my opinion.

If you decide to get more than 1 be sure to keep an eye on water parameters closely just incase the tank cant cope with bioload. I personally wouldnt put more than 2 in a tank that size. Be sure to break up lines of sight in the tank with the decor, that will help to minimize aggression should any occur and provide retreats and hiding spots.

As for gravel or sand they dont mind either that is entirely your choice on which you prefer.

With one, I'd say you could even do 2, even 3 otos in there as tankmates, or even a couple shrimp if you really wanted, while with two DPs, you really woudln't want to put anything else in, so going with one gives you that option.

I have found that my dp's could care less about the difference between gravel or sand substrate and haven't noticed them acting any different in either one since they seem to prefer to rest on plant leaves. What I can say is that I have found it is much easier to see and remove empty snail shells as they usually just suck the meat out and leave the mess for Mom, kinda like my hubby and kids. I pull the vac part off and just use straight hose and it sucks snail shells right out for me. You do have to be careful though that no curious puffs get sucked up, it hasn't happened to be twice!
