Ive never actually had fresh water puffers!!! Ideas???

Well, I am setting up one of my old 40G tanks thats just laying around. I love having all the marine tanks but really miss fresh water!!! Thing is, I have never had fresh water puffers and don't know what type would be nice for a 40G. I am not really concerned right now about a community tank, so aggressive is fine. I do have a lot of sand that I use to use in my brackish tanks, so I will be using a sand substrate and a bunch of bog wood I have laying around. Any thoughts on a puffer?

Oh, I had been thinking about a pair of South Americans but kind of changed my mind for some reason. But if I was considering them, what are good tankmates for south americans?

It depends on the fish. I've kept mine with a variety of fish, from endlers to rainbows to kribs to shellies.. but my particular SAP was a big chicken that ran from anything.

Others might slaughter other fish.

Its always a crapshoot trying to mix puffers with tankmates, you never know what's going to happen.

Yeah, tell me about it! Ive found that out over the years...they can be so unpredictable! I had just heard that SA's are generally quite peaceful.

The other Puffer that I have seen locally is the Suvatti. I really like them but was not sure about a 40G for one. I read the articles which say 30G but just want to double check that one would be fine in a 40G?

40g for a Suvattii, minimum recommendations is 30us so you could have one easily in there.

I have my suvatti or arrowhead in a 30 with some fake plants and a sand substrate and he is going great. I guess alot of them are VERY stationary but mine swims a decent amount. i think you would really enjoy one.

I just purchased Boomer a few days ago <ArrowHead> and he is pretty active as well. And they seem to be aggressive like mad to. Some may hide alot but mine always stays in the open even after added rock caves.
