I have a fairly new 33g tank which is being used for brackish water. I have been cycling the tank for 9 days now, first 6 with no fish, last 3 days with 2 candy stripe gobys. The gobys seem to be quite happy and I think I have 1 male and 1 female. One is bigger with darker stripes. The main purpose of the tank is for F8 puffers though.
I was at Riverfront today and picked up 2 decent looking F8s. They have been living in fresh water at the LFS so I have them in QT with a drip to get em used to brackish water. The guy at Riverfront was a puffer guy himself, he said he had 9, gsp, sa, f8, fugus, etc. He said he required responses to several puffer related questions before he would sell me any, I thought this was great. He asked stuff like “which salt do you use, aquarium or marine and stuff like that. I got all the questions right and got the 2 lil guys
The fish seemed stressed out when I put em in the QT tank, swimming up and down one edge for about 30 minutes. This is prolly normal though when getting new puffers.
I have a bunch of pond snails and frozen krill and bloodworms to feed them. I also picked up a can of meal worms (suggestion from puffer guy at LFS).
One of the two F8s loves the meal worms, he practically jumped out of the water to get it. However the 2nd would not even go near the worms. I dropped in 2 small worms and the greedy lil f8 got em both and the 2nd didn’t seem to care at all. Now I have one big fat puffer and one skinny one =/ How do I go about getting the non eating puffer some food without the 2nd one snatching it? Also is it possible that one puffer likes worms but the other doesn’t? Or is he sick or stressed or something?
My brackish tank is at SG 1.003 and ammonia is at 1ppm, and nitrate and nitrite are at 0. I will likely put the puffers in the tank tomorrow, I don’t think they will like the small (5.5g) QT tank for very long. I don’t see any ich, is there anything else I should be inspecting them for?
Hopefully I can get the non eater to eat some krill or a snail tomorrow and hopefully they don’t beat up the 2 gobys. The 2 F8s look like they will get along ok. They swim around together in the QT tank and do not appear to be aggressive at all.
I gotta think of some names for these guys, other than puffer 1 and puffer 2 lol.
