Grren puffer (T Fluviatilis) - common name topaz?

Post by RachelS »

Just reading the 'Anyone know about Topaz Puffers?' thread in the Brackish Puffer Forum. Appears from the links in the thread that the Topaz is a different species from the Green (Ceylon) which I think I knew anyway?!

So does the common name of Topaz Puffer need removing from the Fluviatilis entry?

No need to post twice about this. Question has already been answered in original thread.

Sorry, I'd typed this before reading your reply in the other

I still think the use of common names spanning 2 (or more) different species is confusing though!

Tell me about!! It's just the way it is unfortunately. Around here we try to use the most common name for each species of puffer and try hard not to mix and match, but unfortunately, not everyone will use the same common name. The reason we list alternative common names is so that someone that has seen the puffer under that name has a better chance of finding the proper information. For instance, if someone saw a T fluviatilis under the common name of topaz puffer and searched for it, they would find the pufferpedia page for the fluviatilis (as well as whatever other puffer may share that common name).

Hope this helps...
