HOB has to go! Canisters for 10g???

Alright, i dunno what i did tonight, but my aquaclear 150 started making noise...too much for my bedroom. I added my eco-complete tonight and the tank is a bit cloudy...and now my aquaclear is silent no longer. I spent most of my night washing and flushing the impeller and motor assembly out and installing it and seeing if it will help. Nothing. I assumed it sucked up some substrate and was grinding, but its still doing it after several cleanings/flushing with qtip assistance and everything.

So, i realize that the HOB filter may not be the best option for my bed room.

So what canisters will work on a 10g planted dwarf tank? I really want to buy a rena but i am afraid the flow will be too powerful. And even if i was going to buy one, i'd buy the xp2 so i could move up to a larger tank when funds become available...

Any suggestions?

Edit** i washed the impeller and assembly several times, still the same loudness. The thing is about 5 years old or so, and it still is running the original impeller. I'd like to think that a replacement may solve the problem, but if it doesnt its just like throwing money out the window.

An XP2 would be fine. I've used massively oversized canisters on small tanks before....

Just pack the canister full, and direct the flow off the glass. It will probably take a lot of fiddling around to get the flow just right for your needs, but I'm sure it's possible.

good cause if i buy a canister, i want the ability to move up to a larger tank and not have to buy another. I noticed it does have an outlet control valve and combined with the spray bar, maybe just slow enough so my little guys don't feel like they're in a whirl pool.

You just have some particles in your impeller. Take it apart & rinse the insede, where the impeller goes. It should be quiet after that.

Oops, just saw your edit. You can just replace the impeller or the whole motor. Parts at: http://www.bigalsonline.com. I have AC's I've been using for 20 years.

Did you actually disasemble the whole unit or just flush it out? To raelly clean it you'd need to take it all apart.

They'd probably love to feel like they're in a whirlpool... just like home

As long as there are dead spots for them to rest/hide they'll enjoy the current.

I find that most smaller canisters given a couple feet of head, loaded with media don't put out a ton of force so you should be fine.

trust me, i unplugged the filter, drained the water out, unscrewed the motor assembly, took out the impeller, flushed the impeller, flushed the motor assembly, used qtips to swap out the motor assembly, soaked impeller in gallon of dechorinated water, shook in said gallon of decholorinated water. Assembled, reinstalled. Repeated.

There is a product on the market now, its a mini canister filter.
There are a couple of manufacturers that make something of a similar design but the most popular is the EDEN 501.

General information is that its rated at 300L/h. Could not find a Web Page for the product though.

I use Eheim's 2211 on 10s and 15s routinely. It is not currently available in the US, but I am told it is available again or still in Europe. Where are you?

i am in the USA, i have pretty much decided to go with a 2213 ehiem classic. Quite a few people are using them on 10g and 15g planted tanks with success.

My only question is does it come with a spray bar? It doesnt look like it. If not, is there one i can buy that will fit?

I have a 2213 and was surprised at how small it is. I think it would be perfect for a 10 gallon tank. Mine did come with a spraybar. The only thing I would really suggest getting is a hose clamp to hold the output hose on the spraybar better, mine is always coming off and one of these days its going to drain the tank all over the floor if I don't get a hose clamp on it.

Oh no, I think the 2213 would be good. I ran it for a long time on a 29, later on a 33xl, but I didn't feel it was big enough by itself. If you are planning on using it on a larger tank later on, that might get a little more complicated. Its hard to get a filter that won't really be way too much for a 10 but still useful for a larger tank... you'd be better off getting one that's a good size for the 10, then adding that to an additional filter when you upgrade, IMO at least. You can always add more, but you can't really turn them down.
