Java moss in DP tank

Post by kei »

I've had my DP tank set up for about 8 months now, and after a bad start with live plants ( dying lighting that a friend gave me with the tank that he no longer needed ) I'm going to start planting again. Just now I've got two males and a female, but I remembered after ordering java moss to put onto the mopani wood that that's what they spawn in. The males chase and badger the female occasionally so I'm just wondering if she'll spawn in the moss that'll be going in, as I've neither the time nor space to deal with babies!
Would a minimal covering of moss on the wood be alright or should I just not risk it?? :?

If your not trying to breed them then do what you like with the moss. Any spawn/eggs will probably get eaten so not to worry that you will have babies everywhere. How large is your tank? 2 males to one female is not a great mix, the 2 males may badger the female to death, or kill each other fighting over territory. See if you can trade in a male for another female instead. :P

As pollypuff suggested unless you are going out of you way to take care of the eggs and fry it is unlikely they will survive. No need to worry about over population. I have had various types of moss, java, Taiwan, flame, x mass and i have not noticed any offspring. I have 1 male and 4 females.

Ah okay! That's good to know, though if any babies do appear I'll probably feel bad that they get eaten :(
The tank is currently about 28L, I got it from a friend so it's somewhere round about there but I'm getting them a new 32L this week so they have a little bit more room. The males so far have been alright with eachother tbh, they each have their own preferred areas in the tank and get along with each other most of the time. They only have a scuffle every now and again and are quick to break up, and the female looks after herself pretty well. She bullies them back if they ever bother her!
I had thought about returning one of the males but the shop that I got them from only has young puffers that can't be sexed and I'm way too attached to them now to get rid of one :D
