The Puffer Who Doesn't Like My Jacket...

Post by Kingsleys »

Hello!(Not sure what forum to put this on....)
I've heard that puffer fish have many personalities. I had not known, however, that they could have grudges against colors.
My pufferfish, Einstein, hates my jacket. If I come close to his tank with it on he will turn black and try to "escape" by swimming up and down the back wall of his tank.
I was worried at the time because I had no idea what the problem was. Was it water conditions? Disease? I soon realized that it was my jacket. I don't wear bright clothing but sometimes a few pinks end up in my closet. Einstein HATED the color. To test this, I wore the jacket and took it off. He turned his good 'ol self once the jacket was out of sight.

Pufferfish are very strange.

Have any of you had an odd experience with your little fish friend(s)?

Mine diligently clears one corner of sand every night; I assume so he can gaze at himself in the bottom of the tank. Vain little thing.

Quite a few puffer-keepers have reported individual puffers responding badly to certain colors worn by their keepers. The source/cause of this is unknown, but it does happen.

Stratters: Don't forget that the puffer inside the tank does not see the same reflections that the keeper sees from outside the tank. That is a major point of confusion for most hobbyists. Just let Bertie give you a reference to his attempts to study the idea - he nearly suffocated himself!

That is one of my all time favourite Dumb Things To Do stories. I wonder if he do a repeat, so I can find out what the bottom of the tank looks like :D

I have a "toy" periscope/underwater viewing device I got for our son 'way back when was kid. It is packed away somewhere around here. I think I've used it more than he did.

If for no other reason, Bertie gets gold stars for owning up to the trials...
