Hi there,
New to keeping puffers (actually don't have any yet!)... The tank is a 30g tank, with crush coral and sand, lots of plastic plants and couple of other hiding places. Its currently setup with fresh water, but have everything ready to go brackish.
The local fish store has a what they say are leopard spotted puffers, as well as figure 8 puffers, in the same tank, and I am thinking of getting one of each... Is a leopard spotted just a fancy name for a green spotted puffer, and can I expect this fish to grow to 5" to 6".... would this be too overpowering for the smaller figure 8?
Also, knowing that these fish start life in fresh water, and my tank is fresh water, when should I start to add salts and turn it brackish?

These fish are totally incompatible not only due to size and aggression but also they require different water chemistry. You could house 1 gsp, you could start to raise the salinity towards marine conditions at 0.002 increments weekly until the desired sg is reached. Or you could do a pair of f8s and raise the sg to 1.004 in 2 weeks. Welcome to the forum
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly
Re: leopard spotted puffer
Wow! I was not expected that for an answer .. just goes to prove that the LFS are useless, and doing more harm to fish then good.
Are you saying that a 30g tank is ideal for 1 GSP (which is a leopard spotted???), or two f8's?
Cheers,

Re: leopard spotted puffer
That is correct, but consider that is minimum requirements, in reality bigger is better for them

Re: leopard spotted puffer
Although we do state 30g is the bare minimum for a GSP, it would be much better housing for 2 F8s. Try to get them young, so they don't fight.
You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...
