Post by alessandrodamilano »

Hello everybody, i'm alessandro, an italian guy who will start with an adventure with puffer fish very soon.
I'm writing ( maybe not perfectly in english, i'm sorry) to ask some information about abei puffer ( tetraodon abei ).
I know the size of the fish ( 10-11 cm ), the water ( 23-27 ph 7 gh 3-15 ) and the size of the tank ( about 95 liter).
Someones have any advice? other informations? How i can made the tank? i mean plant, sand, ..

I have not kept an Abei, however, I will suggest PFS, (pool filter sand), as the substrate. I currently have it in both my puffer tanks and think it’s great.

Welcome.

Unfortunately we are currently changing servers so a lot of the information we had up is not available right now. Do you have any specific questions we can help you with?

Live plants are excellent. You'll want a busy tank so the puffer can explore and hunt. This will be excellent for the puffer when you put in live snails and shrimp. I like to put those in when the puffer is asleep so they have to spend a decent amount of time hunting for them through the plants. You'll also want some open areas for the puffer to use (this can be where your current is stronger).
It is absurd to talk of one animal being higher than another. We consider those, when the cerebral structure/intellectual faculties most developed, as highest. A bee doubtless would when the instincts were.

Ok, small news: i've find a store who sell tetraodon abei in uk, i wait a response to my mail.
However,
the water must have PH between 6.2 and 7.4 , GH 4-13 and about 25 T. right?
The biotope is asia, bacins of mekong river or chao phraya, someone have any links about?
The minimun size of tank is 25 g, in fact i've one of 95 liter. it' must be heavy planted with place where the puffer can hide but also swim.. i must study a great layout! but i've a question, my tank is wave poseidon 80 riviera and has a 18 watt for light. I know abei is a crepuscolar and nocturn hunter, so a small light is ok? or i have to change neon with other more power?
i've read the lifespan of this puffer is about 8-10 years, it's true?
Now.. food! my friend will give me his small tank (30 liter, maybe!) and i will breeding snails, then i i will breeding also blackworms and mussel, chironomus, tubifex and.. other things?
it's all :D

That light will be fine for a puffer. Well looked after puffers will live into their teens
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

I have not seen them in Lfs here. There is a shop in Essex who stocks most puffers, not sure if they will post that far tho, plus forgotten the name lol. Forgot to add earlier if you are gonna plant the tank you may need more lighting
