Hermit Crab Aggression??

Post by goldielocke76 »

So Yoshi could be here any day now, and I am super excited, BUT (always that nasty but) the hermits have all of the sudden turned nasty. Well, one of them anyways. Snaps is NASTY!!! He chases Pig all over the tank, he pulled him out of his shell last night then chased his nekkid butt, and relentlessly picks on Pig-- refuses to leave him alone. Is there a reason for this sudden aggression? It seems it's all over shell too. If I get a 2 inch GSP, can Snaps potentially harm him/her??
5.5g: Pond snails
5.5g: Red Cherry Shrimp and Rams
10g: PZ the Pee Wee (DP), Ghost shrimp, Otos x3
36g: Luau the F8, Zebra nerites x8, sometimes a herd of ghost shrimp for food
60g: Perches the starry blenny, 1 watchman goby Snaps the l.c. hermit, 2 emerald crabs, 1 red crab, 2 turbos, 7 asteas, 2 nerites, 2 clown gobies and 2 firefish gobies (upgrading to a 90 gallon reef)

RIP Yoshi, you are dearly missed <3

how many shells do you have in there? i dont know much about hermits but i think they will contend for shells if there arent many "suitable" ones according to them

There is at least 20 of them in there. About 8 taken from various different tanks, including the one they were in at the LFS, and a range of small medium and large ones bought from the LFS. It seems as if they have divided the tank up into left and right territories, and and Snaps is slowly getting all the shells with the algae on them on his side, and Pig goes over there and noses at one of them, and Snaps gets all crazy. I have had to really keep an eye on the tank the last few days because poor Pig will get stuck and when he does, Snaps is all over him like white on rice. It's crazy.

that does sound crazy o.O i had a small hermit in my tank with some snails and a starfish, he never showed any aggression... but then again i didnt have any other hermits to compete with him so i would have never saw anything like that

Yeah it's weird, because they have been doing fine, and all of the sudden, just beating the heck out of one another. It's noisy too!! If I hear the loud clicking sound, I know something's going on LoL.

I would not worry too much about the puffer, the confident crab will soon be in his tummy. If it spends it's time out in the tank instead of hiding he will be a nice lunch lol
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly
