F8 with buldging eye...?

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

F8 with buldging eye...?

Post by DrKennethNoisewater »

hey i am posting this for a friend in need. he has just gotten this fish so its fresh out of the bag. had it ordered in and it came like this. i asked him to send me a pic and hes working on it. i did not post the water parameters as that would be the parameters in the bag and not in his tank. the bag parameters are unknown. if this is something that is common from shipping is basically what im wondering or if it could be something seriously wrong. i for the time being advised melafix and to treat for IP's and HOW to treat for IP's because i figured those are alright things to suggest. so to clarify the puffer has 1 really swollen kind of bulgy eye. i asked if it were cloudy and he said no. most common causes given the little information??? im trying to figure more out. thanks if its possible to help with that little info. just to note, all the questions above seem to be for fish that have been living in the tank and acquired an illness, so they seem irrational for this issue. I can tell you its a 55 gal with 2 F8's and a clown pleco (going to be moved very near future) and its fresh because thats what he came in, slowly moving him to low end brackish. all of the rest were and will be as per recommendations on this and other trusted sites. the tank is well established and has been for over a year. (if any of that matters for this question)

Clean water will give the best chance. So regular water changes is all i can suggest.
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

Melafix is one of the best things to use for this.

Perfect :) that's what I suggested. i though I had read a post before about Melafix helping with what seemed like infections and things so i said to get some quick before the store closed. He never made it, so tomorrow.

With the info provided than the steps are:

1. CLEAN WATER. (say 50% a week, maybe a bit more until healed)
2. melafix. (suggested serving)
3. pray (given your religion)

I also might be inclined to try Epsom salt if it's severe, since it is good for reducing swelling.

Is the eye itself swollen or the tissue around it really erythematous and swollen pushing the eye out? Most eye injuries heal with in 48 hours, eyes have a remarkably fast "healing rate" because the corneal tissue repairs and becomes less of an irritant so you see rapid resolution of the symptoms. The actual healing process takes just as long as other tissue though even after the symptoms subside. Socket infections may need some treatment than just Melafix (awesome thing for eye tissue injuries). Everybody is correct so far in the treatment (praying helps, no matter the religion) but if things don't start to look better with 48 hours or the socket is erythematous and swollen you may need stronger treatment. I would hold off treating the IP's for right now though, let the fish destress, acclimate to new surroundings and, heal from this first. No sense in stressing him further, I would do it soon but not right now.
