New breeding tank

Post by Tim »

To treat my puffer to a better meal I decided to get another tank for breeding critters. I already had a 2-3gallon for MTS bmut the snails will be replaced by ram horns and pond snails (forgot to ask if they were okay in the same tank for breeding so if anyone knows).

The new tank is a fluval edge. I bought some nice gravel and some hardy plants along with it. I will be using it for shrimp breeding :D. I got 5 galaxy rasbora for the cycling process, which i hopewill be good enough for it.

I also found a microcrab that i am going to attempt to feed to my puffer.

Just finished installing everything and putting water + plants in there.
Lighting on these Fluval Edges is pretty poor :C might have to go out and get something a bit brighter. Also disappointed there is no heater so that will be another trip to the LFS. Kinda weird for the money they ask for a Fluval Edge.

Are those balls of moss (sorry, I don't know what the actual names are) good for putting in snail tanks as well? I have to go to Petsmart this weekend and stock up on snails, and I was thinking about picking up one or two of those if I knew they would be beneficial to help my snails procreate more LoL
5.5g: Pond snails
5.5g: Red Cherry Shrimp and Rams
10g: PZ the Pee Wee (DP), Ghost shrimp, Otos x3
36g: Luau the F8, Zebra nerites x8, sometimes a herd of ghost shrimp for food
60g: Perches the starry blenny, 1 watchman goby Snaps the l.c. hermit, 2 emerald crabs, 1 red crab, 2 turbos, 7 asteas, 2 nerites, 2 clown gobies and 2 firefish gobies (upgrading to a 90 gallon reef)

RIP Yoshi, you are dearly missed <3

Marimo or moss balls as they are sometimes referred to are a type of algae. Since snails eat algae I am guessing the balls might go missing after a while. Not sure if snails will like the specific kind of algae the balls are made up of though.
I put the 2 ram horns in the fluval edge and so far they only went over the balls once and then completely ignored them afterwards.

The pics looks great! I like the way that tank looks, too.

The Marimo balls at PetCo here are always covered with baby snails. They're kind of expensive though. =[

They charge the same price for most plantpots here, which is probably around $6-7 each. Though in case of regular plants its usually 3 to 4 plants per pot. Only get 1 marimo for that. Not sure if it is a high price though

Pond snail tank I set up today that will hopefully be sufficient

I will have to find a better place for it, but since I will be rewiring everything at my work area I figured I would wait with that until then so I can add extension cords in the right places.

Marimo balls here are 9.99 a piece. Potted plants are 3.99 and loose plants are 2.99. Not sure why everyone charges so much for the moss balls. I may break down tomorrow and buy one for my breeder. haha

gotta love how the fluval edge looks :) they were just on sale at the big als down the road for $99.99 CAD. not terrible. if only they made a little bit bigger of one, maybe like 15 gallons or something so it could be put to use for more than a breeder... i also really like the fluval seamless tanks they are quite classy!

I was thinking the same thing though I was wishing for 30gallon+ :D. The lighting is pretty poor on these edge tanks though. The LFS did have LED lights as an upgrade but they cost $40 each  but the galaxy rasboras prefer the current lighting I think. Just hoping they wont be eating my baby ramhorns & shrimp. They are sub 1 inch though, very tiny fish.
