Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.
1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.
2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.
3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)
4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.
5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.
We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.
While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.
Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

cut lip
So whilst getting rid of a little excess energy on one of his little rampages darting round the tank. Whilst looking where he wasnt going hit a rock and has a little cut, i am not too concerned. However should i treat with melafix to aid healing? Water params are all in check and nothhing new to declare. Can give more info if necessary. Just not sure weather to treat just in case of blah blah blah
It's amazing how easy maintenance is. If done regularly and thoroughly

be sure to remove any charcoal or carbon in filter (if any)
add an airstone (if possible)
add some everyday per the instructions
works great!

Re: cut lip
Healing times vary, but I know you are very fastidious on your water changes, so I imagine it will heal fairly quickly and nicely with all the fresh clean water. Maybe about a week or less. It depends on how bad the cut is, where it is, and the individual puffer, everyone heals at different rates.
You could add a little melafix and/or pimafix to the water to help prevent infection, but I don't normally add that stuff to the tank unless I notice something is infected. Often times, clean fresh water is enough.

It has been 11 days with just daily w/c. Thought bout melafix but decided i would go au-naturelle. Maybe start melafix? Is certainly looking better, just not as good as i would like. Or ride it out as improvements are being made and he dont seem fussed. Thanks

Re: cut lip
IME Pimafix helps a lot if the cut is deeper. Otherwise just keep the water super clean and he should heal up fine.

Re: cut lip
Lol, really? I'll have to look that up. It's definitely not a bad thing. I try to do water changes twice a week, but I usually end up doing them every other day if I have the time. My shifts on base are usually pretty weird so it just depends.

Be sure to disinfect that hose so you don't re-introduce Ich back to the tank.goldielocke76 wrote:bertie 83 wrote:sevenyearnight wrote:LOL Reaper, there is a whole thread about bertie being obsessive about his water changes!

Re: cut lip
I've never used a hose, although I probably ought to. My water changes are more traditional, and consist of using a 13 gallon trash bin to empty water into the bathtub, and then filling it up, conditioning it, and pouring it back in, all in the space of about 2 hours if I do all my tanks. A hose would be great lol.
