Question about rocks from a river.
I went to the lake today that forms off one of the larger rivers around me. While i was there i looked for new rocks to add to my tank and i found a really large, holey rock. I brought it home and cleaned it up. I was wonder how i should go about disinfecting it and possibly bleaching or getting rid of the brown color. I'll add a few pictures so everyone can see it. Just wondering if anybody can possibly help figure out what type of rock this is, if it's safe for my tank (Which houses my GSP) and any good ways to clean it. Thanks to anyone/everyone in advance!

I don't know what kind of rock that is, but it looks great.
I believe if you want to bleach it, you could soak it in a diluted bleach/water solution until it reaches desired affect. Then rinse the bajesus out of it, and then soak it in water with a dechlorinater.

Right on. I read that you could use peroxide too, or vinegar. I got pretty lucky to find that piece. It was buried almost completely along the beach under a bunch of mud/clay.

Yes, which ever way you decide, I would definitely make sure it was rinsed very well, and also given a good dechlorinating soak.
Don't boil it though, it might explode.

I'd recommend the vinegar. Also, you can bake the rocks instead of boiling.

I ran the rock through my dishwasher without soap, of course, lol. Got all the spots i couldn't get with my scrub pad/shower head. Looks good in my tank. It's a nice tan color now instead of a dark brown/green. I really enjoy it. Had to sacrifice some driftwood but the rock definitely makes up for it!

I've come to the conclusion that it's impossible to get pictures of Smudge with a normal digital camera. Gonna have to break out the DSLR so i can just snap away. Anyways, here are a few pictures of the tank, my gobies, and Smudge. The tank is simple, but i like it. If all goes as i plan, Smudge and friends will be getting a new, permanent, 50g home soon!

Re: Question about rocks from a river.
Thanks guys! It was an amazing find! Right beside the rock i took there were about 4-5 much smaller rocks of the same type. Probably softball size instead of the 25 pounder i pulled out.
Xray, you're correct. It's an emerald green cory.
