Angelfish issue

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.
1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.
2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.
3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)
4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.
5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.
We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.
While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.
Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

Angelfish issue
I had an Angelfish in a 10 gallon tank with a Red tailed shark *YIKES* - she got way too large, so I moved her and her friend over to a 45G. The tiger barbs in the 45 didn't notice the shark but attempted to rip the Angel into pieces. She got so stressed that she started laying on her side and looked nearly dead, I put her in a 14 gallon with 3 danios, 2 cories, a few ghost shrimp& some snails. She still isn't swimming much and seems very stressed. She physically looks OK but doesn't swim much and floats around aimlessly as if the water blows her around despite a very gentle current, she is obviously alive. Lots of fin movement but not much activity. I would take her to an LFS but I doubt they would want a fish that randomly goes on its side and looks half dead. Will she be OK in here? Will she eat the other small fish?

Re: Angelfish issue
Sounds like shock, imo. Had fish do that but never pulled through though. Now this dont mean she will not be able too. Might want to try to keep her in a tank with no other fishes and calmer water.

Happened to a 7" EBJD that Filbert decided to attack after growing up together, since it was 1".

Still alive but is the same, thinking of adding another 100 GPH filter for about 7.5-8X more turnover rate, I keep my pond comets in a water tote on the porch for the winter *too cold here/pond not deep enough* - so I may just temporarily take one of the small filters I run on that tote.

Also sounds like swim bladder disease since it lasted this long and cant keep balance.Aquarist wrote:Still alive but is the same, thinking of adding another 100 GPH filter for about 7.5-8X more turnover rate, I keep my pond comets in a water tote on the porch for the winter *too cold here/pond not deep enough* - so I may just temporarily take one of the small filters I run on that tote.

Has her balance , sightly tilted a bit back but is slowly swimming, was at the bottom earlier but managed to get back up to the top and is staying there no but is able to swim a bit down. Seems to be improving but still doesn't seem like a normal fish

Yeah that really does sound like swim bladder disease to me. I wish someone else could give you better advice treating it. I only ever had maybe one fish that got it way too many years back. RTR or Corvus or even someone else that had success treating it could probley help you out.

Re: Angelfish issue
Great comeback, I really didn't think she was gonna make it. Use Melafix for the torn fin.

Yeah, and here I started to think it was swim bladder disease.

Is Melafix safe to use? I have some quite sensitive inverts in here.

Re: Angelfish issue
Absolutely, use as per the directions (1 drop/g) & be sure you have good water flow/airation in there.

I don't have any but my local grocery store actually sells it. Is it 100% necessary?

I don't keep tanks without it on hand.
