Update on my F8s... proud

Post by fugu99 »

Well I finally got my hydrometer. Luckily the petstore guy was spot on with the salt measurement we needed, even though I did a water change yesterday (and added salt) the salinity turned out to be about 1.003. I was worried for the last two days that it was too low or too high!

At least one of the puffers has been a bit off-color, but I gather hes more just moody. Understandably, because he is stuck with another puffer in a 10 gal. :( Tony and I decided to go the extra mile and give them a 30 gal. Hes going to move his cichlids into a bigger tank and we are going to setup his previous tank for the puffers. It wont be another week I think, perhaps more. At least the puffers are in good color, nice white bellies, and good appetites. Although the moody one is a bit of a picky eater. Otto likes crickets, we offered them as an experiment, but Herbie doesnt care for them. He ate a snail right away when I put it into the tank though. And they both go for the frozen bloodworms.

I do feel badly that we didnt do research on puffers beforehand, finding out later that they need much more space, but its just one of those things. At least we are trying to fix it now. It happens sometimes, you walk into a petstore and see a fish you want, something you dont think youll be able to get again. Almost like a kid in a toystore, really. The puffs fins are healing up really well, but Ive noticed some white speckles so Im taking gentle steps in case it is ich. I know its very possible that they have it, because Tonys cichlids are having an outbreak of it now, and the puffers were in that tank before. They may or may not have been the carriers. Because I read that the ich treatment can burn their skin, Im doing a mild salt treatment. Ive raised the temperature to around 82 degrees (in the past two days). Ive also added 1 tbsp salt per gallon extra. The salinity rose to about 1.007. I was wondering, because I know Ive read it somewhere but Id like a second opinion, how high should I raise the salinity to treat ich? I know its supposed to be gradual. This is my second day of treatment and Ive been doing a 10% water change each day. Ive never done salt treatment before and Id rather not mess up the tank stability I have at the moment. The puffs are acting pretty normal, pretty much as usual, hunting and foraging, eating, and greeting us when we come up to the tank. They like the watersprite I bought, they spend a lot of time napping in it. Its doing great in the water.

What are you doing now, to threat the possible ich? Are you sure you aren't seeing their tiny spines?

Im pretty sure, the first specks I noticed were on their fins. Ive spent a lot of time looking at them really closely. They have been flashing against rocks and plants for at least two days and one of them lost its appetite and was being listless, hiding, the other was flashing. I think one of them had ich to begin with and it spread to the other.

Ive been following advice I read on the forum and I asked some advice of people who have had F8s and what they did in the situation, Ive been told I need to raise the temp to about 86 degrees F and the SG in my tank should already be sufficient to kill the ich. Im doing 10% water changes daily and making sure to resalt the water. I have to adjust it today because I think I read my hydrometer wrong, yesterday it said the SG was 1.007, today it reads 1.002. But when I do my water change Ill adjust accordingly.

The puffs seem much better today, the listless one is up and about and his color isnt faded (moody) and they both ate hungrily. The temp this morning was about 81 degrees, I have to gradually raise it a bit more.

One of my puffs likes to rub his belly against the glass. Its hilarious, but is it normal? Hes not flashing it against the glass, he just swims up and presses his belly against the glass and swims around or floats. If its not because hes sick, I think its his personality coming out. Hes also a piggy eater.

Okay after a 5-day ich period treated via salt and temp, my puffers are cured of ich! :D They are also now settled into their new home, 30 gallon tank! I added some of those fake mangrove trunks that Pufferpunk suggested, and I need more plants but I have one very happy watersprite and a Java Fern. Ill have to post a picture eventually but I found some cool puka shell substrate that was much cheaper than the cichlid sand Tony uses for his tank, I combined the puka shell (gorgeous shells in that substrate!) from Carribsea with the Florida crushed coral. The puka shell is multicolored because of the shells, so I put that on both ends and put the mangroves in that and spread the white crushed coral in the center. Tony gave me two rocks from his tank and I have them toward the back, I planted the watersprite behind the one mangrove and the Java fern in the top of the other trunk. The puffs love all the space, they zoom up and down and now whenever we come near the tank they swim up to check us out. The puffs are doing great together, they sleep and generally swim together. The only time they show a little agression is during feeding time, naturally. We got them a veggie clip and some wild-caught frozen shrimp and tried it out yesterday... vicious little eaters. haha theyre so cute. They loved it. I cant wait to get some more plants. But they arent glass-surfing anymore. I was worried that they would go crazy because of all the shells in the substrate but they actually ignore them. They know when they are being fed, and they hunt sometimes but I dont see them chomping on shells much... they seem pretty smart. They know what is food and what isnt. (Unlike Tonys dumb cichlids... they were afraid of the shrimp and the veggie clip and I had to dangle it from my fingers to get them to even try tasting it). Well anyway Im proud of my tank, ich is gone and their fins are almost totally healed up now and they have a lot of space, temp is around 81 F and SG is 1.006.

Time for another update! Its nearly a month later and everything is going rather well. Only I wish my snails would grow faster... grr... but they are bite-size now anyway. So for a recap I have two Figure 8 Puffers, now residing in a 30-gal. tank. I WILL have to take pics, sometime...

My only problem with my decor is that the driftwood log I put in that came from the store is excreting a white slimy goo algae or mucus. Tony read that its either an algae, or that its caused by sugar in the sap of the log. Ive washed it off three times and its still coming back, and I guess Ill just keep at it... Its pretty gross looking. Especially when the fish lay in it. EEW. But Ive got two plastic tree trunks on either end, both with a good growth of watersprite (I just cant get the Java Moss to grow, even though I threaded it) and a Java Fern that seems kinda happy, I dont know.. its green anyway. Not growing as much as Id like. and a couple rocks thrown in, with a new airstone, and voila! Puffer soup! Ok, not funny. *cough* Im considering buying a more powerful filter when I can, since I know ammonia levels can be dangerous with puffers. They are notoriously messy eaters. But the tank has some new additions, YAY! And Id like to thank everyones good advice on the matter, because everything is peachy keen. haha... what is up with me today... ahem. I started out with some Bumblebee Gobys and Green Neon Tetras... and they are all pretty small. I was extremely nervous, thinking they would get eaten or bullied right away! But after nearly a month Ive observed that the puffers treat the other tank habitants with respect, a mild curiosity perhaps but generally they ignore them, and in some cases even seem to be afraid of them?? They get nervous about the Gobys, which I thought was interesting. At feeding time, when they are done with the shrimp the Gobys will swim up for their turn, and the puffers will leave the Gobys and shrimp alone until they are done. Its awesome! Its not what I expected, so worried about my fish fighting or trying to kill each other, eesh. I worried about the Gobys and the Tetras too, but they are fine. Tony went out and got some more of both, so now we have six Bumblebee Gobys, 8 Neon Tetras (4 Green, 4 Blue (I like the blue, they have red tails)) and I recently acclimated my juvenile mollies to the brackish water (its about 1.003) and they seem to be loving life eating the algae from everything. They are the babies of our mollies that died, and I couldnt bear to part with them, and theres five of them. Three are bronze, and two are orange and black. They are from two seperate mothers. Now they are about a half an inch long and they love to school together in the tank. They are so cute when they are that small... and Ive seen them hiding together under the same log with a puffer, side by side, so I know the puffers arent a danger to them. So cute.

On a similar note, I finally graduated my baby Red Wag Platys from the baby tank to the Platy tank, and they are so adorable! Two of them turned out really bright red, but one is paler, almost peach. I think this might be a sign that the father really was my other Panda Platy (black and white). And my Albino Plecostomus named Ocelot is now one of my favorite fish... not only is he pretty, hes energetic! He cleans all day long!

I'm glad things are going so well for you!

I think some woods have to be "cured" or that slime will be forever coming back. I'm not sure how to go about that but I wouldn't leave it in there.

You mention something about ammonia levels. Do you have any ammonia?

You can't keep tetras with the F8s, they are not BW fish & will not appreciate any salt at all.

Actually, my puffer tank has been great. No Ammonia. My only problems are the weird log fungus, the slimy algae thing (I should take a picture of that) and the black mold? I have black mold growing on my decor. Im actually getting the green algae coming in over everything, I noticed it today, so happy. And I cant get the Java Moss to take hold. It looks unhappy and gross. But then, I have it tied to the log... anyway. Ill remove that soon and try to soak it until the sap stuff stops coming out. Dont you cure with salt? Anywho. The mollies are a godsend because they are cleaning up the algae (the black algae and the brown that grew on my substrate... its so blech). And my watersprite looks happy but keeps getting bleached whitish instead of green...

but no, Im careful about feeding and cleaning so I dont have ammonia levels. I know its more serious than with other fish since they dont have scales and it will burn their skin. One of my puffers is never happy though. Hes super-skittish! He freaks out about anything and zips off through the tank. Sometimes he tries to jump out O_O... and the other one is calm and spends his time hunting the bottom or hiding under the log.

Oh about the Tetras. Ive seen people keeping them with F8s before? They seem fine but I know that doesnt mean anything, I just mean they seem normal. SO either people keep their Tetras with F8s in brackish water, or they keep their F8s with Tetras in Freshwater. Which is wrong. But wrong both ways I guess?
