purple algae? good or bad in a tank?

Post by lesleyanndunn »

I've noticed over the last month or so, I've been getting purple velvet type algae
It grows on the background in the tank, the ornaments, and now the leaves of the plants

anyone know what it is?

only new thing that I added about a month ago, was a plant food which is not meant to encourage algae growth.
i only add a few drops every 2 weeks as stated on the box.
my lights are on 6-7 hrs a day, so not too much light, and I dont have excessive nutrients in my tank
i do 50% weekly WC, with prime, and stir the sand and vaccuum the substrate well, and have 2 internal filters on my tank

its not unsightly, as its not all over the tank, my glass and substrate are spotless.

just wanted to know what kind of algae it is

Sounds like cyano.

will try, its very hard to see with a camera
it would remind me more of a moss, very slow growing.
