Alternative media for a magnum 350?

Post by sevenyearnight »

A magnum 350 came with my used tank and it did not come with the micron water polisher, only the plastic core center piece. I will not be adding carbon to it. I can buy the micron filter locally, but I wanted to know if there was something better to use I instead, or to add in the chamber in addition to that micron filter.

Thanks in advance.

I also have a Magnum 350 that I used for years until it started getting week. Dont know its the magnet on the impeller or just the motor is going bad. Got to replace something. But, I thought of the same thing as you. Thought about adding some hollowed ceramic rings in the center of the media basket. Would give it that extra biological media.

I was thinking of putting the biomedia beads on the outside of the water polisher so they don't get clogged, but the center might be better, I'll have a pre filter on the intake so clogging may not be a factor anyway.
A pool micron filter is half the price but all kinds of the wrong size.
I just have the tank running on 2 power heads with sponges from the tank Mortimer is in now, I can't find bio spira here, so tetra safe start was recommended. I have to get some egg crate for the top tomorrow as well. I don't want to wake up to a hair covered cat chewed Mortimer.
Anyway, I didn't care too much for the price of those bio ceramics, wondered what others may have been substituting.

Well its best to use a media basket with the filter sleeze over it rather then the polisher. PetSmart sells the Bio Max in a box but there are other types of bio media out there that would work also. I was going to buy somemore to add extra to my AC 110 HOB filters.

I'm not sure I saw the media container on the s shelf, I'll have to look around for it.
