46 Gallon Tank Need some Salt Advice

Post by sassiegemstone »

Okay, my friend helped me set up and cycle my Saddle Puffer Tank and my puppy ate the recipe as I call it for saltwater.

How much marine salt do I use for my 46 gallon tank?

What are the correct readings? Think my hydrometer is broken.

Correct Temperature for Saddle Puffer and Damsels?

Good Reference link?

Congratulations! Tobies are cute little guys... post some pictures if you get a chance!

Most of the bags that the salt ship in will have some basic directions. I am really lazy when it comes to mixing salt water... I add a whole lot of salt, check with the hydrometer the next day and slowly add fresh water until I get 1.023 SG and then let it mix another few days.

1.020 and 1.025 is generally recommended. Stability is usually the most important thing as long as you are in that general range. My advice is to get a new hydrometer if you think yours if toast or (if you can afford it) one of those refractometer gizmos. Pufferpunk just pointed this one out:

Should be the normal 76-80 F range for tropical fish.

There was a week in which absolutely everything went wrong for sassie - a terrible string of bad luck with one thing after another.

Hope things are going better, sassie, if you're reading this.
