I've had these baby parrots in my community tank for a couple months. They were in a tank with what looked like a hoard of siblings, all the same color, not painted. Painfully cute! Since then my smaller one has begun to flush orange across the belly and pelvic/dorsal fins. Today I noticed this smaller one (Giblet) had dug a hole in the sand with her? mouth and was dancing around guarding it while Goblet (larger parrot) patrolled a slightly larger perimeter.
...FYI, I currently have no room to set up the 55- gal they will eventually live in (corn snake is living in it upstairs), but it will be magnificent for their very long lives, I am sure! (They are currently each about 1.5-2 inches)

Nice looking lil Parrot cichlids. Cichlids love to dig alot so there is no surprise that one is digging. All my cichlids dig all the time without any mates. Also love the rubber lip pleco . Btw, I just noticed that you live in Indiana. Southern or Northern part?

cool fish=) when i got my first cichlids i got a choice between some kribensis and parrots but i chose the kribs because it was only a 60l tank even though my mum was wanting me to get the parrots
my hobby is water keeping. the fish are a bonus =D

They were sold as parrots, and I have seen older ones, and esp. the little orange female has a waddle-y swim and they have little parrot-y mouths... but now I am worried... They've been playing nice so far! LFS still has a bunch in, maybe I can take a pic of the tank sometime.

@F2B: I live near Ft. Wayne, north half. I grew up in Goshen/Elkhart area.
Their mouths don't look quite like the convicts, but this could be wishful thinking, I guess. I thought parrots couldn't close their mouths, and I have seen mine crushing up blackworms in their throats (hence the species' controversy). Their mouths are so silly when they stretch their lips out!
But I think yours is much more pink convict like as opposed to a half and half cross. But, it could have 1/3 or less of blood parrot in its genes. You will probably never know.

i couldnt pull up the video at work. but either way, parrot or convict, they dont belong in a commnity tank. i have seen some pesky little buggers in friends tanks
yeah i would say they are young pink convicts. they dont have the "sour" look on their faces and are more slender. they are similar but i dont know how a LFS, unless their knowledge is very minimal, could have them mis-labeled. they are a very common semi aggressive to aggressive stock selection for most stores
Yep, have to agree with the rest about them being pink convicts. I just was not paying attention.

Yaaaa... well, at least they'll be ok in the 29 for longer than I thought! Maybe it will be an excuse to get the family to trade entertainment center for a 55 for everyone else . Fish are better than TV. I just supposed they would grow into their chubbiness and such, like a Who and its nose...
