Canned Oysters for GSPs!

Anyone else tried canned plain oysters from the grocery store for feeding GSPs? I know mine love them!

All my other fish gobble them too, i use a fork, cut it in half, and feed them the layered looking park of the oyster. Then i feed the rest to all my other tanks.
I know fish love seafood, but had no idea how much they'd love it...more than bloodworms!

If you choose to try this, make sure you get PLAIN oysters in water, not oil. You can find them by the tuna and canned sardines. Get a sturdy Tupperware container (you dont want fish smell in your fridge trust me!) and put half the can in the freezer so it doesnt go bad.

They last about two weeks and its a great variety food! Let me know how you like it!

Aren't there preservatives & other chemicals in there? Kinda defeats the purpose of using the shells to trim the teeth but I buy scallops without the shell just for the meaty factor.

Since this could possibly be a general meaty food for any puffer, I'll move this thread.

Never thought about trying this with my Fahaka. The wife has 2 cans left in the cabinet. Yeah she eats those nasty things straight out of the can on cracker. Read the ingredents on the back of the can. Says oysters with shell, water, and salt.

The shells are in there? What keeps them preserved? Not sure i'd feed a salted food to a FW puffer.

Yep, You have to pop them open and eat the meat out of them, yuck . Don't know what keeps them perserved. Might not had been printed. Ok, no salted food for a FW puffer. Just never tried it before so wont risk it.

Other thing is they're cooked in the canning process.

GSP isnt only FW.
I forget what salinity i have mine at usually, but it varies, seeing as how they're brackish.
I rinse the salt off and feed it to them. The ones i have don't have shells in them.
The problem im having is i cant find enough shelled food for them at the grocery store.

Anyone have any other unorthodox opinions?

Find a grocery store that sells fish products in the produce section. I have no problems finding plenty of foods in our local Jewel/Dominick's.

Yes put a pet label on a product and charge triple the price of what you can get it for at your local grocery store. It's called marketing.
Same thing as when you take your pet to the vet and they prescribe medication which of coarse they sell to you. 99% of pet medications are really people medications. Always ask your vet for a prescription of your pets meds and have it filled at your local pharmacy for 1/3 of the price.

LOL, or you could just go to your nearest Wal-Mart (only place that I shop mainly for food and other stuff) and probley get them alot cheaper. I think everyone in the US has a Wal-Mart and most has a seafood section in their food department. Btw, PP does your fahaka like those mussels you get?

Yes, salt is or can be a preservative. Rinsing salt-preserved foods removes the surface salt, but the soaked-in salt stays there to be consumed.

+1 to Dadof4's comment - canned foods are heat-preserved in the canning process. Additional preservatives may or may not be used or needed -that may depend on the particular food.

Seafood counter at the grocery purchases make up the large majority of my large-puffer diets, and a good bit of medium-puffer food as well. Sort it out into smaller zip-locks for freezing and store the smaller bags in large ones by food or fish for which they are aimed. That makes the selection and handling for thawing easier for me.
