New tank

Post by Dadof4 »

So I found on heck of a deal for a tank 120 gallon reef ready, 100 lbs LR, 2 skimmers, 2 48 t5HO lights, ballast for a metal halide, sump, all pumps, and the floor support jacks for $200. It's replacing my 75 gallon brackish. Plans: 1 porc, some sort of blenny, and I'm not sure where to go from here on to get some color. Any suggestions?

I bought it, I just have to go pick it up. I was thinking a few file fish of some sort just to add a splash of color.

I don't know a ton about the compatibility here, but could a school of damsels hold their own? They're very pretty.
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

Most filefish can grow quite large. I would let the puffer be the main larger fish & put some smaller dithers in there. LGP is right about the damsals. I like the bright blue, yellow-tailed ones. When you move the LR, be sure to get it into SW asap.

That sounds great! Congrats!

My best suggestion would be that after the relocation, give the tank several weeks minimum to get the chemistry and biology restabilized. I would not be in any hurry to add fish to a tank after a major move and associated upset. After all, how much does a porc tank need in the way of ornament? Who adds flowers to an 800 lb. gorilla's enclosure? ;)

If your family wants or needs color, the damsel selection is great. Everybody has their own favorites - look around and decide which is for you and this particular setup.

So,over the couple of weeks do I have to add anything as food source to the tank for the critters in the LR?

Cool, easy enough. I was going to put the LR in a spare 55 gallon I have just to let it cure for a while but I'll probably just place it right in the tank and watch it closely.

It's a good idea to cure your rock in your tank before you add anything live to it.

No pics yet. I'm having trouble with the bulkheads leaking, the tank is full and cloudy as heck. I transported all this in a very unique way. I had 2 pick truck plus my minivan. We were able to keep the sump filled to the water line and I had a little circulating pump I ran off an inverter, we kept the sump live during transport! All the LR never left water, ever, we had a pail that is 3 gallons and fit each individual piece in the bucket while it was still in the tank, then we transfered it huge coolers filled with water that had a circulating pump running. The tank was emptied and placed in the back of my van and everything else went in the other truck. Reversed the process bringing it in. Found a Nudibranch in the LR....he's pretty!
