Horsehair worms & ghost shrimp?

For heaven's sake, my bad fortune continues.

I bought a dozen ghost shrimp with the hope of setting up a breeding colony. Don't you know, 3 have died already and 2 at least, have what I think must be horsehair worms. I understand from maybe half hours googling, that there "is no cure, no treatment", but I would like to know if anyone here has any idea of an effective treatment? Most of the topics I've found just say "oh yeah your shrimp has a horsehair worm, common. It'll die but heck ghosties only cost .30"

Someone got a better answer? I'd like to save them. I mail ordered them, and so I paid a bit more than 30c each.

take a pic of the shrimp. The worms should be readily visible. Send that to the vendor and A) get new shrimp, or B) get a refund.

I have never tried the Jungle Fizz tabs or treading IPs in inverts.. Given the cost of treatment, it is probably better to freeze them and flush them. Get some $$ back or have them send some other shrimp.

At least it's a local company, so replacing them shouldn't be a huge deal. Good idea on the pix, I'll do that.

the guy successfully treated his shrimp with the jungle products + melafix + pimafix.

From what is seems, these worms are not passed on to the fish and very unlikely from shrimp to shrimp. Once a shrimp does pass a worm (live or dead) there is a good chance that the shrimp will die anyway.


If you want to try meds.. you may but I personally would just pick out the bad ones.

http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn7471.html is also a good read. If the larva (parasite) doesn't become free swimming, it can't lay eggs and repeat the cycle.

I found those links, thanks That's how I figured out what they are - blecch.

And there was another similar thread on Fishlore with a follow up...but the shrimp died.
Weirdly enough, I can't find the shrimp with the worms now. I decided what the heck and fed them some medicated pellets after I posted last evening.
