A betta - if your friend will go for a real tank, say a ten gallon.

LOL!! I was going to say lionfish!! haha but that would be mean.

Fancy guppies are ok.. or a solo weather loach (I know they are supposed to be kept in groups) but they are VERY cool and quite personable. They will come and greet you at the glass when they get older. 20gal+ for those guys.

a betta in a nice sized tank would be good. another good one would be a small school, say 5 or so, of small tetras in a 10 gallon. i've always liked rummy nose and glow-lights.

After seeing a video of 100's of tetras schooling, the idea of keeping them in "normal" sized tanks makes me sad, and I have done it in the past.
