Bought this puffer at lfs and they just called it a puffer in general. after some research i'm sure i have what they call the "green bottle puffer". Can anyone give me some info on this puffer?

More than likely, you have an A silus. Please post a pic for proper ID.

I can get a pic this evening after work. Glad your of help to me. I'm a complete newbie to puffers. I do know some are brackish,fesh, and marine. I just want to make sure before i make a move from the temorary tank. I actually have 2 of these puffers, they are small maybe 1" right now and have noticed they are very active. I know the typical f8 or gsp puffer are more laid back. Anyways i'll get some pics posted asap. Hoefully i can get a correct identification and some help on what i need to do to care for these little guys as best as possible. My wife bought these puffers, and i knew right away puffers weren't the best fish for newbies such as we are. The store she purchased them from basically is of no help to us. Hopefully with the help of some of you guy's i can give these guy's a good chance at a healthy life.

I've got a Nefastus and mine is quite nice. They were very aggressive at the LFS (biting and nipping at each other) and I thought there was no way I'd be able to keep mine with any tankmates. Well out of necessity (at the time), I had to move my Bornean redeye puffer and so I decided I would put a divider in the Nefastus tank, but something happened and before I knew it, the Bornean was right next to the Nefastus, and nothing happened! So I pulled up a chair and I watched them for a while, certain that something bad would happen.
The short version of a long story is that they never did fight and are still living together, even though I could have separated them a long while ago. I've named them Felix and Oscar to reflect that they are indeed an "odd couple". But seriously, my Nefastus is very laid back and I will be honest, I wasn't keen on him at first, but he's grown on me and now I am quite fond of him.

Just out of curiosity PP -- are the Nefastus difficult to get over in the US?

I've never heard of one here. Who did the ID on your fish?

I will try to find a photo and post it up .... but we checked all the signs from what is written in the Aqualog book on discerning between silus, modestus and nefastus.

Soon as i figure out how to make the file smaller i'll post a picture up. I couldn't get any real good pics though. Looks similar to the silus picture you posted. I did notice both of mine do have a dark spot almost between their eyes. They also seem to be not as long and slender looking as those. Anyways i'm trying to figure out this picture thing, so i'll get that done asap. Thanks for the help.

To both of you, until Corvus IDs for you, I'd not be sure it's a nefastus yet.

Pictures will be much appreciated for proper ID. Either way, most of these puffers have similar care requirements. What are you keeping them in at the moment? Your description of their active nature matches what I have seen in A. Silus fry.

Considering the nefastus grows much larger than the other 2 species, it would be good to know the ID.
