My Fahaka is about 4 inches long, and when he's not biting, I don't see his beak. Most of the time, I don't see it anyways. How can I tell if it's getting too long? He doesn't have trouble eating - but the snails are multiplying quickly, but are all still tiny specs except for the ONE that has been pumping out the eggs (16 egg blobs currently in the breeder, with hundreds of specs all over already hatched)...
The shrimp I have currently, he won't eat the shell - he'll just rip out the soft stuff. Clams, same. If I use a bamboo skewer and stick it in the tank - tap at the rocks, he'll attack it - but it's so fast it's hard to see his beak...
One night I saw him attacking rocks - picking them up, chewing on them and spitting them out... Was he wearing down his beak? I think he'll love the snails once I have some of a worthy size... but until then, how do I know if it's getting out of hand? If I don't see it do I assume it's fine?

I would say yes
There was a SW puffer on here that had a HUGE tooth. I think if you cant see it you cant do anything about it
