So at my trusty LFS i recently aquired a Mono Argentus under the assumption that i could keep it. I told them i have a 30ish fresh tank with a puffer... They said it would be a great addition, good with puffers and an easy keeper. :x

When in reality they require brackish and eventually full marine. They grow to the size of a small dinner plate for gosh sakes!!! So what I'm asking is how long they can live in fresh. Sources have said as juvies they can live in fresh and mine is still small. I plan on getting a full Marine tank eventually, but that could be a year or so. Can this fish stay with me in fresh for that long? I know that its my fault for buying without knowing but to return him is an hour+ drive.

Also, this a.m. he was oddly colored. His normal silver shine was replaced with a grey/black color. He acted fine and when i can back after about an hour he was back to normal. Anybody know why? Regardless of if he stays with me or not, i want him to be as healthy as possible.

Not only that, they are schooling species, so it would require a minimum of 300g for a school. Poor monos...

Wow, it never ceases to amaze me at LFS that sell such large fish and say they will be fine in such small tanks... :(
