Since the neurotic ones are going to JP I will need new puffers for my tank. It's a 55gal, heavily planted. I was thinking of putting in some irrubescos and maybe 3 DPs. I'm not sure about this mix though (and definitely not set on it, just a casual curiousity). If I were to go ahead with it (both or just irrubescos) then what numbers should I be looking at? I'm in no rush and frankly haven't been able to find any irrubescos around. I'm on a couple waiting lists though.
Tank currently has 4 cories and I'm hoping to up that once I find the right species. These guys can have their own tank if necessary. Cute little buggers.

It is absurd to talk of one animal being higher than another. We consider those, when the cerebral structure/intellectual faculties most developed, as highest. A bee doubtless would when the instincts were.

While I've never actually had irrubesco with dwarf puffers, I would be reticent to do so. The reason I say this is that both can be a bit "peckish" (and I don't mean this in the English sense of the word). Dwarf puffers like to have a nip at other fish and irrubesco can sometimes be like that also.
I can say that I've had irrubesco with corydoras' and that seems to work fine, as the irrubesco totally ignore the cory's, but the dwarf puffers do not. I have cory's in my community tank, and I also have dwarf puffers in that tank as well, and if a cory happens to come by and stop for a bit in an area that's a DP territory, a dwarf will come out and give it a nip to make it move along. They don't harass the fish at all, just nip them to make them move away. I have never seen any of my community fish with tatty fins, not even the Gourami that are in there, so they aren't that bad. But to some extent, you always take a chance with dwarf puffers.
If you can get ahold of some irrubesco puffers, you could have a lovely group of them in a tank that size, especially as you say it's heavily planted, they would love that. I had about 14 of them in my 58-gallon tank, but I also had 4 lorteti, 2 male salivators and 1 male Bornean puffer. I don't have all of them anymore, I'm down to 7 irrubesco, 1 male salivator, and 1 male Bornean, but they aren't all together anymore either.
