possible ich

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

possible ich

Post by GS puffer keeper »

Hey all,
Let me start by saying thanks, thanks, and more thanks , this forum is an incredible wealth of information that I have been utilizing and I finally :D joined!!!!!
My tank parameters:
30 gal
ammonia: 0, N02: 0, PH: 7.9, NO3: >10 ppm, SG: 1.014, @ 80. F
I cycled this tank using the fishless cycle method at the same SG.
I have one GS puffer about 2" long I have had since the tank finished cycling about two weeks ago. I realize that the SG is a little high for one of this size but i unfortunately believed my LFS when they told me at what SG they were keeping the GS puffers in. The day I purchased the puffer, I tested the SG of the water that he came in and found that it was about 1.010, I then drip acclimated my puffer to my higher SG since I didn't won't to disturb my new bacteria in my canister filter. Everything worked out fine and my puffer feeds on snails that I breed in a heavily planted 10 gal. and freeze dried krill like it's his last meal hehehe!!! ( I love hearing those snail shells crunch from outside the tank) I have never seen any dark patches or any signs of stress on my puffer and I thought that everything would be fine until about 2 days ago when I just happened to notice 1 small white dot the size of a grain of salt near the base of it's upper fin and one near the base of it's lower fin. It hasn't developed any more any where else and I was a bit skeptical about ich at this SG until this morning when I saw him rub his body on one of the rocks one time. I then started reading everything that I could find including the fine literature in your library. Am I just paranoid? I have already turned the heater up to 86 and I wasn't sure if I should treat this like salt water ich or fresh and start slowly raising the SG and doing water changes every other day?? Again thanks everybody any and all input is welcome/needed!!!!

Welcome to the forum!

I would raise the temps and do a good WC every other day for about a month. This is how I treated my GSP's and they are doing great. It's very common for them to get Ich within a few days of brining them home. Just make sure you don't use any harsh meds on him...since he doesn't have scales it could be very harmful to him.

You should also plan on an upgrade soon. A 10 gallon is much too small for a GSP you'll need at least 30 gallons for him with good filtration...These guys are messy!

Thanks,
That was what I was thinking, BTW, it is housed in a 30 gal. sorry for the confusion, my snail breeder is a 10 gal..... The only problem with that is my sorry city water has trace Nitrites but I use prime anyways so that should be neutralized until my filter can utilize them.. Yep no meds, Thanks busybones!!!

I had Ich problem with my F8 puffers in 29gal, water change every other day ( 60%)+ adding aquarium for a month. I had cleared Ich in about two weeks, but I needed to contine treatment for another two weeks just to be sure its gone.
