need help fast :-)

Post by emobile »

Okay, so today I am picking up my new GSP. Our LFS brings them in and puts them in a freshwater tank and advises to always keep them in fresh water....so that tells you right then they know nothing about GSP's. The ones they bring in always have ich. I got one two weeks ago and did everything for him but he only lived 4 days :-( I have had a tank up and cycling for 10 days and I have it brackish (low end 1.004) I have the temp at 80F. It is a 46 gallon tank and I am running a 110 aquaclear and an already established (good bacteria) 50 aquaclear, which I will remove once things are cycled fully in the tank. Do you think that is too much filtration? I also have an aerator running. I am picking him up in 3 hours and I need to know what else I need to do? I know all about adjusting him slowly to the new water and temp etc. My question is then what do I do about his ich since he is sure to have it they tell me? Is the brackish salt (I used instant ocean) going to help him or do I add normal aquarium salt? I have spent $1000 in the last 2 weeks on a new aqurium and filters and good decorations and I want this to work out sooooo badly this time. I have read everything I can and I want to be the best Puffy Mommy ever, lol. Any advise you can throw at me in the next bit would be very much appreciated, Iknow these little guys are tricky and I fell so hard in love with the last little guy that I just don't think I can handle losing another one :-( P.S. I know all about the food etc as you guys helped me out so much with that already and I have a little snail tank all set up and have new eggs :-) already so I will have nice yummy baby snails soon.

As long as the tank's actually cycled, and you acclimate your puffer slowly, I dunno what else to say, but good luck! Though, I have to wonder about putting him in brackish after he's been in FW, even with drip acclimation. Don't know, just wonder. I hope all goes well for you.

I can change out some water to make it less brackish? Yikes, I don't want to pickle the poor little guy!

Sorry, never got a chance to amswer your PM! Good luck with him today, you must be soooo excited! I don't think it will be too much current/filtration for him, it sounds perfect. I just hope you get one that is strong enough to survive the incompetence of the LFS. Once it's out of there, if anyone can do it, you can! :-)
Keep us posted!

It's my understanding that the variation of salinity/sg is very easy on them, and they can actually thrive on it since in the wild they'd be swimming through different conditions on a regular basis. It's just the filter bacteria where you have to be careful, right?

Yes. Just acclimate him very slowly.
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

A bit off topic, but... All I remember about my one trip to Alberta was windmills, and beer...

I've done the drip-acclimation several times and never had any bad effects from doing so. I don't usually leave them in the bucket for more than an hour. Puffers, especially brackish ones, can adapt very easily because in their natural environment, they would get variations between fresh and salt anyway with the tides, etc. So I would not worry about acclimating the little puffer.
As to the issue with ich (whitespot) .... first thing I would do is start raising the temperature, 1 degree F per hour. Actually, you can kill off the parasite just by raising the temperature, but of course, you can add the salt too, if you want as that will also help. But if you didn't have any, you could just as easily get rid of the ich by temperature control too. If my memory serves me right, I believe the parasite is killed at 89.5F. I f your fish can handle that temperature, if you keep your tank at that temp for 6-7 days, it will effectively kill off the ich parasite. After the 6-7 days are over, reduce the temp to 86F and hold it there for the remaining days until you've had the heat up for a combination of 10 days. Make sure to have an air stone to give more oxygen whilst you have the heat up, and do daily water changes of at least 25% while you are going through this treatment. This WILL kill off the ich, whether you use salt along with it or not.
I hope your little puffer doesn't have ich, but if he does, just follow those directions and you should be okay. I don't bother with medications any more, I just turn up the heat, and I've never lost a puffer yet since doing it this way.
Good luck! :D

Like I said, I didn't know about the salinity thing. I was just wondering... Yeah, I'm a rabble rouser!

I got him! Well for some strange reason I get the feeling its a girl, I know you can't sex them but I have always had the ability to sex our baby deer from their faces (waaaay off topic) so anyhow, I am sure I will pick a female name. I was suprised at how big this batch was and.......much healthier looking too :-) "She" is a good two inches overall length and is very bright green and nice and round looking with a very white tummy so she is much healthier than poor little Puffy was last time. I can already see a huge personality difference, Puffy was a real hunter and this one seems very mellow and hasn't eaten at all yet. Poor thing puked up a huge amount of blood worms in the bag after I brought her home, I guess the pet store fed them right before I arrived. So anyhow, so far so good, she is busy exploring her 46 gallons and I hope she doesn't mind she didn't get a sand bottom because after Puffy's sand kept stopping my pump, I am done with that stuff! Oh as for the ich, there is no sign of it so maybe I got lucky, but I am slowly raising the temp up to between 82-84. What is the best temp for a GSP? I don't want to stress her out tonight but will try and get a picture of her soon to post!

I felt like I'd stirred things up a little with the whole question about salinity acclimitization...

Just an update....everything is going GREAT:-) The new little puffy is doing awesome. There is no sign of ick and she is eating well and very busy checking out her new home. She was very shy the first two days but now is exploring all the caves and nooks and crannies, she is still not that fond of me looking at her but that is getting better too. She seems to have adapted to the brackish water fine and she is so bright green and white :-)
