Tank has been sitting fallow - want a new puff....

Post by mrgreen »

I have a 5.5 gallon that's been sitting empty for months. It had snails and worms in it and black sand. Filter's been off, too. I just rinsed the whole thing and took everything apart and laid the pieces out to dry. I'd like to get another DP, but am wondering if my filter is okay, assuming I get some used media from lfs to cycle. I took out the impeller, too, and rinsed it, as it had problems starting up because of the sand. (Obviously don't want to go with sand again.) Is there anything I need to do besides what I've done- rinse well with water?

I don't see why you'd have any problems. it's not as if you had some bad disease going in that tank, was there?

You can always sterilize with Oxiclean.
You are getting sleepy... you only hear the sound of my voice... you must do water changes... water changes... water changes... water changes...

No, no diseases.

Thanks PP. I hadn't thought of oxyclean. :)

Do a planted DP tank, the Hex (What you have I believe) Has a really strong light for keeping hardy plants.

I've tried planted but they always seem to die. I'd love to do planted in my 5.5, but ... This is going to have to wait since I'm going on vacation for a week and a half and new tanks need monitored quite a bit.
