How to use Instant Ocean Hydrometer?

Post by mrgreen »

I just got one today as my thermometer/hydrometer was frustrating to read and not very accurate I think.

I'm a bit confused how to use it. Do I put just the lower left side in so it fills up through that hole? Or up to the hole on the right side, or...? When it was pretty much full of water, I set it down and it registered 1.006. I rinsed it before and after with tap water.

My Puffers: I have had my first puffer for about 2-3 weeks now and her name is Mrs. Puff, i just bought another puffer about 5 days ago and his name is Mr. Puff. They are awsome fish and they look great!! Mr. Puff is more curious and loves to see me. Mrs. Puff is very shy but im working with her so hopefully she will become more open.

Thats what i do with mine. It says on the box that you let it fill up with one of those holes till it overflows up top. Mine always goes pretty slow, so i just dunk it under the water and let it fill, its just as accurate as if you were to let it fill up through the hole. If you have any air bubbles on the pointer, tap it with a pencil tip or the bottom of a spoon, I use the bottom of a plastic spoon. air bubbles (as it says) will greatly effect the reading.
Puffers are amazing!! :)

Just dunk the whole thing underwater & when it's full, tap it to remove any bubbles.

Thanks. :) That sounds good. I did tap it a bit to remove bubbles. I did a bit of reading online about how aquarium hydrometers work and this seems to be the accuracy I need. A refractometer is just not worth it for what I'm doing. If I had thousands of dollars invested in corals and a huge tank, etc. I'd go in for one.
