Anyone Own T Erythrotaenia?

I'm going to get a pair of these tomorrow and just wondered if anyone could tell me what they are like?

I've got my Aqualog book and have read up on them there and in the PufferPedia, but doesn't tell me much about them really.

So if anyone can tell me something about these little puffers besides they are brackish, I'd appreciate it.

Distribution: Asia; Asia and Oceania found in indonesia and New Guinea
Main Ecosystem: River; Found chiefly in mangrove areas, also found in tidal creeks and rivers will sometimes swim into fresher waters upstream
Temperament: Aggressive; Like most puffers they tend to tierlessly search the tank for food and will nip fins unless there is an over abundant supply of food. Will eat smaller fish

Diet: Carnivore; Feed Frozen and Live foods like bloodworms, shrimp, snails and other bugs and invertebra. Should be fed shelled food regularly like ghost shrimp to control the groth of the normal puffer beak.

Care: This species likes to live in river tanks with sandy bottoms that are well planted. They can eat plants if they think there is prey on them but usually only take small chunks. Adding salt to the tank will keep them healthier if they are in freshwater, and the temperature in the tank should be raised into the 80's with salt to help rid them of ich as they respond poorly to medications.

not sure about the sex, but the evil was a bit bigger than the others (and probably male). sold this last puffer to Woland.

I'm very disappointed because we headed off today to get the pair of puffers, and the car broke down. Had to wait for AA, and in the end, had to postpone getting them. I called the shop and the man said he would save them for me (now whether that really happens or not, will remain to be seen). I'm going to try and get up there Tuesday or Wednesday. I've been wanting those for a while now, so definitely want to get them.

Blanketman - did you keep yours in low-end brackish? I was surprised to find that some information says they can live in high alkaline freshwater, or very low-end brackish.

sorry to hear about the car. I had the puffer in low end brackish about SG 1.005 in a 110 liter tank. latest news on the fish from its current master:

I have had Toshiro for a bit over 3 months.
He is in a temporary 40 liter tank.
Salinity 1.005. Doesn't have a heater in the tank.
Guess the temp is around 20-22 celsius.
He seems to be thriving.

and since this is a pretty "new" puffer fish, this forum is filled with pretty much the same questions repeating and repeating. I therefore suggest you take a quick search (search.php?st=0&sk=t&sd=d&keywords=%2BErythrotaenia++ on this forum and find someone who have more news and info than I do at the moment.

and yes, when I someday get a place to live with bigger space I really want to have this puffer again

I talked to the shop owner and I'm going to try to get up there either Tuesday (if the car is better by then) or Thursday, as he's closed on Wednesday's. I'm going to take a chance and get 2 of them, male and female and see how that goes. If I see any aggression, I can always move one out.

I've been curious about this type of puffer for a long time now, and I'm even more curious now since reading what Woland said, about little puffers not being very interesting but this one being an exception (not verbatim). That intrigues me. I've stayed away from the aurioglobus species because they just don't have the "puffer look", and I don't think erythrotaenia has much of a puffer look either, but all the same, I'm going to go for it.

I went today and got my pair of erythrotaenia puffers, and I thought I would relate what's happened since I got home.

I set up their tank this morning, taking a filter from one of my other tanks (as I have extra filters running on my tanks), so I was all prepared for them when we got home. Thing is, the tank I put them in does not have any sort of top or lid, so I will have to get one. Well after we unpacked all the stuff we bought, and I let the fish out (I also bought an Otocinclus and a dwarf goby too), I was feeling hot and sweaty so I went up for a shower. My husband came up and said to me that he could only see one of the new puffers. I thought to myself that he probably wasn't looking properly or maybe it was hiding behind something. And I finished my shower, got dressed and then went back down stairs.

When I looked into the new tank, I could only see one puffer myself. So I started moving things around, and still - only one puffer!! At this point I started to freak a little because we've got 3 dogs, one of which is a hoover and will eat anything. So I was panicking. Then I moved the dog's water bowl, which is on the floor, beside where the new tank is on the countertop .... lo and behold, there was the puffer!! I picked it up and put it back in the tank and it didn't move, so I thought, that's it, it's dead! Turned out it was the female. Well my husband starting going on about how I allowed a new puffer to jump out of the tank, yada, yada, yada .. because he had said that they were going to jump out if I didn't put something over the tank. Honestly I didn't think it would happen that quickly and I thought we'd go to Maidenhead tomorrow and I'd buy one of those plastic covers.

Well I'm happy to say that after a moment, the new female puffer started to move and swim. She seems fine now. I hope she didn't hurt herself by jumping because it's about a 3-foot drop. That's how quickly things happen. Luckily my dogs didn't find the puffer before me because if they had, there wouldn't have been any hope for the puffer, and who knows if eating the puffer would have hurt my dog!

So everything is alright and I'm looking forward to enjoying my new erythrotaenia puffers.

I do have something over the tank now and I will get a plastic lid tomorrow when I go out for mussels.
