cant find a good hydrometer or refractometer

Post by Mrs.Puff »

I bought this hydrometer and ive already started my brackish water last night, but it doesnt have a low enough sg reading for me, so i just made sure that it was below the very first sg reading which is 1.012. I made sure that it was so low that it prob didnt even move. Is there a better way to make sure i have the right amount of salt? Like maybe tablespoons per gallon or something? Ive looked everywhere for a really good hydrometer, even for an electric one and i cant find it anywhere.
Puffers are amazing!! :)

Yup, that's not the one you want. You need one that starts at a FW readings of 1.000. Instant Ocean & SeaTest makes one. You can usually find inexpensive salt refractometers on Ebay. I got mine for $35 but you need the calibration solution too.

Also look at http://www.drsfostersmith.com. If you do decide to buy stuff from them, go to our sticky about how to get rebates.

This is the one I purchased a while ago to replace the more expensive one that broke.... It works beautifully and I had no problems with shipping except that it took a little longer then I thought.

Mine is the same as Dadof4's as well, I believe (looking at that item on the EBay listing). Works fine, very easy - far easier than messing with a hydrometer if you ask me.
