Re using salt

I know the saying goes ask a stupid question get a stupid anwser but this has been going through my head for days

i somehow remembered an science lesson i once did where we boiled some sea water and was left with salt so i was thinking not that have tried it mind couldnt you do that with our wate and re use the marine salt

well dont know for certain, the one thing that there could be a problem is that any pollutants in the water mix will be left behind with the residue salt, so may not be all that safe? Also would imagine have to boil alot and keep popping to the beach? Its a good idea, if general consensus is try it I may well do!

I saw some folks talking about this the other day. The conclusion was that if you have access to safe seawater, why bother boiling it down when you could just use the water as is?

*edit* Oh, used tank water? I think lilacamy could very well be right, and I seem to remember something from the discussion about important components evaporating with the H2O. Still, it might be worth a shot, if you had some regular water on hand to do a fast w/c.

I would tend to think that the dissolved organic solids in the water that are not broken down yet would remain with the residual salt after boiling.

Ditto to that. The main reason of water change is to get rid of metabolic wastes that are not good for the fish such as nitrate, nitrite and ammonia. I know that nitrite and ammonia will be left behind in your left over "crystal mix" after the boiling/evaporation process, so unless you can get rid of only the wastes in your mix leaving all the good salt behind, it would give you almost the same composition of waste after you reconstitute your recycled salt mix into a solution.

Zilch. The ocean has amazing water quality, if you don't count the damage humans have done.

I live near the ocean..and I wouldn't take the water from our beach *shudder* I see how much pollutants are in and around..it's kinda gross

Basic rule is to go out for enough to get good clean water. Maybe one mile from shore if possible.

And I agree it wouldn't be a good idea to try and reuse salt from the tank.

In some parts of the world, people get great water from the sea for their aquariums, but around most of the US and UK, it wouldn't be good.

I grew up in The Bahamas....the quality of the sea water there was never a problem LOL! In fact the Atlantis resort fills up and tops off its GIGANTIC aquariums with water from just off shore.
