IP Problems? HELP!!!

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

IP Problems? HELP!!!

Post by pufferpuggirl »

I don't know what's happening to my puffers, but I seem to have something weird going on.

I had one of my suvattii die last Saturday night, 23 May. At first I thought it was velvet, and then maybe whitespot/ich, but then I didn't think it was either, and so I was left unsure why the poor thing died.

Then my Congo puffer died on that Monday, 25 May, but I didn't think they were related. The Congo seemed to get darkish spots, which at first I thought was just a natural pattern because I know that some of these puffers can change their appearance.

Since those deaths, the 2 remaining suvattii have not been "normal". They are reluctant to eat, although the smaller one did actually take some prawn the other day.

Then I found some weird looking white stuff in my Baileyi tank, which from another posting Myaj has said she thinks could be internal parasites. And now this morning, I am really upset because one of my suvattii has something strange coming from it's anus. To be honest, it looks like maybe he's passing his intestines. Could that happen? I really thought the little guy would have been dead yesterday morning when I woke up, but he's still going, and doing pretty good. I mean, he gets up and swims.

Now, the common element in all of this, is some fish my friend assured me were home raised and therefore should be okay for my puffers to eat. I am feeling like a real jackass because I'm starting to think that these "feeder fish" were inferior and now have done something to some of my puffers.

So -- worst case scenario -- if my puffers do have internal parasites what do I do? I also need to ask if it's contagious at all. And most importantly, what do I do about it? Will it kill my puffers? I am really worried about my Baileyi, although he seems fine, but if that white stuff is his poo, then that means something is not right with him and I need to know what I can do to make it right again.

If IP is the problem, what products do I use here in the UK, and how is it used? Other than whitespot/ich, my puffers have never been sick before and I don't know anything at all about how to deal with this sort of thing.

I'm feeilng very scared right now at the thought of losing my puffers.

I'm due to be getting a new puffer on Wednesday and I was going to put him in with my suvattii, but I'm guessing if they are having problems, then I don't want to put him in with them. So my next question is -- if internal parasites did kill my Congo, would it hurt the puffer I'm getting to put it in the tank that they Congo was in?

I hope someone can help because I'm feeling really sick inside thinking about all of this.

*** After I wrote this and posted it, I got to thinking and I need to tell you that the suvattii DID NOT eat any of those "feeder fish" because they all died before the suvattii got a chance to eat them. So what could be their problem? However, I know that my Congo and my Baileyi both ate those fish, the Baileyi ate 1 fish and the Congo ate 2. I just thought i should add that on here so you have all the facts and that way can make a better diagnosis ***

Thanks,
Suz :(

Can you get any pictures of what is coming fromthr anus of the suvatti? Could this be a tapeworm infection? The others don't necessarily need to eat the feeder fish to get them...There are different types of tapeworm too so really wash your hands when you are done in the tank. Also, Edmflc1 had a Fahaka with IP's and tape worm and had successful treatment. I'm at work and can't search for the link but the title was about Annebelle......If you can't find it I'll look more when I get home.

I don't have any photos of the discharge, I've only seen it twice, that was yesterday and the day before (Saturday). And I'm beginning to lean towards worms as the culprit, at least in the Baileyi's regard. Actually someone sent me the link about Annabelles problems.

Thing is, I'm trying to determine which product I need over here in the UK, and I won't be able to get out and get something until tomorrow, and I've got a Palembang coming on Wednesday.

It's all getting stressful for me!
