Adding a Figure 8 to a A. Silus tank

Post by drives2002bmw »

I have a 55 gallon tank with two A. silus in it. Got lots of plants and rocks to hide and swim around.(I do weekly water changes 25%) I saw tiny little baby figure 8's at the LFS .25-.5 inches long and wanted to see if this tank would support a little figure 8 as well? I know figure 8's want a slight brackish water condition and was wondering if adding one Figure 8 would be ok? Could he survive in the freshwater? Could I move up the salinity to 1.005 or so and would the A. Silus survive/flourish?
Or am i just a sucker to cute puffers and I need to hold off on this fish until I get another tank?

The latter.
Give a man a fish, and he'll eat for a day. Give a fish a man, and he'll eat for weeks.

You'll have to get another tank because F8 puffers need water parameters completly different. Yes, they survive in freshwater but we don't want them to survive, we want them HEALTHY! :D

I've never had an A. Silus, but I think they suppose to be only freshwater puffers.

Not only that but it is always a very bad idea to mix puffer species. The silus will most likely kill the F8.

ok thats what i thought, I wanted to check with this forum before I did anything I regret!!!
Thanks for the responses, I"ll have to wait to get some figure 8's.
Are figure 8's easier to keep then GSP's? I had a GSP a while back and he was very fragile with living.

I find most puffers to be quite tough, if you pick a healthy specimin, add to a cycled tank, feed properly & do regular, 50% weekly water changes

The PufferPedia will generally have these answers, too. :)

In terms of tank size, a GSP is a bit more difficult, simply because water changes are bigger, and they require more salt, and salt is $$$. (Many owners go to marine eventually, so that's more salt and equipment.) Also, newbies are a bit more likely to find themselves in a sticky situation with GSPs because of minimum gallon requirements and because they're more aggressive to tankmates, at least usually. But, other than that, no major difference.
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him or her. Will she gain anything by it? Will it restore her to a control over her own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to freedom for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."
