puffers eating salt?
ok so i just added a little bit of API tonic salt to my DP tank with my water change like i always do, but this time i noticed something weird. my DP's took a huge interest in the salt, and then began to eat it. they started nipping at it and their bellies began to grow like they do when they eat, so they're obviously eating the salt. is this bad for them? is it normal? has anyone else ever seen this before? on the plus side though they are all fianlly sexually mature and i lucked out and got 2 females and one male for sure. the male has such bright eye wrinkles. they're so cool. maybe i'll get babies soon!

No that's not normal. Before adding salt to your tank you really need to disolve it first. I'm not sure if it can harm your puffers or not. Just don't do it again.
Disolve it first in a cup with tank water then add it.

yeah, i really should have done that, but i never have before and never had an issue with it until now so i never really thought about it. i'm going to keep a close eye on them, they appear to be acting normal right now, no ill effects yet. i'm just hoping i'm not going to wake up to a tank of dead puffers.

Don't add salt to a FW tank--it's not necessary at all.

If you don't dissolve it first, it will burn their skin.edmlfc1 wrote:No that's not normal. Before adding salt to your tank you really need to disolve it first. I'm not sure if it can harm your puffers or not. Just don't do it again.Disolve it first in a cup with tank water then add it.

Re: puffers eating salt?
well good news, i woke up and my puffers are no worse for the wear. they're eating well and acting healthy. and thanks for the article, i never really put too much thought into researching why i was adding the salt, i figured it was just to maintain ion balances and electrolytes. i'll most likely stop adding salt then unless i have a problem (like ich). thanks for the help everyone.
